MAPLETON — A 24-year-old woman was transported to the hospital after her car collided with a train near U.S. 89 and 2400 East on Friday, Mapleton City Fire Department said.
According to the department, the crash occurred around 2 p.m. on Friday. The woman was the sole occupant of the vehicle and was transported by emergency responders to the hospital.
Utah County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Spencer Cannon said that the woman was relatively uninjured in the accident.
"She was very fortunate," said Cannon. "Really miraculous."
The woman reportedly told officials she thought the train was traveling slower than it was. The train caught the back end of her car, leaving the woman relatively unscathed. According to Cannon, if the woman had been traveling half a second slower she likely would be dead.
The woman was issued two citations for failure to stop and not having a license.
At 2 pm this afternoon, Mapleton Fire responded to Hwy 89 and 2400 E for an auto vs. train. The vehicles sole occupant was transported to the hospital by Mapleton Fire. Utah County Sheriff is investigating.
