Utah running back TJ Green enters transfer portal

SALT LAKE CITY — Days after Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham named his top four running backs going into the 2020 season, TJ Green entered his name into the transfer portal.

Green, a junior from Chandler, Arizona, tweeted Tuesday afternoon that his decision to transfer came "after deep thought and conversions with those close to me." He leaves Utah with 59 rushing attempts for 258 yards in two seasons.

On Saturday, after Utah's first scrimmage of fall camp, Whittingham said junior Devin Brumfield, sophomore Jordan Wilmore, freshman Ty Jordan and redshirt freshman Micah Bernard were in the mix to travel with the team this fall and have minutes this season. He said Green "didn't have quite the production the other guys did in this game; although, he did some good things as well."

Utah managed to pull Green away from Oregon State prior to his commitment to Utah, but he was lost in the depth chart behind all-time leading rusher Zack Moss.

"First off, I want to thank God and my family," Green said in his tweet. "I'd also like to thank the Utah Football program for playing a part in helping me achieve my dreams, including graduating with my Bachelor's Degree.

"I want to thank Ute Nation for welcoming me with open arms and showing me nothing but love all these years. To my teammates who have become my brothers, I am incredibly grateful for your support and to have played alongside you for the past few years. We are family forever."

Due to NCAA rules related to the coronavirus pandemic, Green will be allowed to transfer to another program without penalty of losing a year. He becomes the second Utah player in as many weeks to enter his name in the transfer portal. Wide receiver Jaylen Dixon entered his name in the transfer portal last week.

"Jaylen decided to move on," Whittingham said last week. "He hasn't really been with us full time for several months — he's been going through some issues that he's trying to work out. Jaylen believes that perhaps new surroundings and a fresh start would do good, and I'm all for that; we're all for that."
