Washington (dpa) - Patricia Kennedy Lawford, 82, the younger sister of former president John F Kennedy and ex-wife of British actor Peter Lawford, has died.

Lawford passed away on Sunday in New York of complications from pneumonia, her family said in a statement.

Lawford was born May 6, 1924 and was the sixth of Rose and Joseph Kennedy's nine children.

She worked for a time for NBC radio and married the British actor Peter Lawford in 1954. The pair, who divorced in 1965, had four children.

She contributed to her brothers' political campaigns, beginning with John's 1946 Congressional campaign.

She also campaigned for her brothers Robert and Edward. After Robert was assassinated during his 1968 presidential campaign, Lawford published a book, The Shining Hour, which featured memories of her brother.

"My sister Pat is irreplaceable," her brother, Senator Edward M Kennedy, said in a statement through the John F Kennedy Presidential Library. "Everyone who knew Pat adored her. She was admired for her great style, for her love and support of the arts, her wit and generosity and for the singular sense of wonder and joy she brought into our lives."

During her later years, Lawford was involved in philanthropic activities for the New York art scene. She founded the National Committee for Literary Arts. She also volunteered with the National Centre on Addiction and the Kennedy Presidential Library.
