ST. GEORGE — Drivers were encouraged to use St. George Boulevard and Riverside to travel east and west late Sunday night hours after heavy rains caused flooding in parts of St. George, stranding several cars on flooded roadways, Washington County Emergency Services stated.

As of approximately 1 a.m., westbound traffic on Red Hills Parkway, between100 South and 700 South, was closed until debris could be cleared. Debris was also reported in the roadway of St. George Boulevard, Red Cliffs Drive, 200 East and approximately 300 North, and Bluff Street.

Sinkholes were reported near the Ramada Inn, near 1000 South and 400 South, and 1400 East Foremaster.

Additional streets were also reported as affected by flooding, such as Main Street, Red Hills near the pond, 1450 S. Rocky Road to River Road, among others.

Washington County Safety also reported stalled cars, sewer backups, and a malfunctioning traffic light. Additionally, the city of St. George reported a downed traffic light between 300-400 South and 300 East.

The early damage reports followed an overwhelming amount of calls to tow services and emergency dispatchers Sunday night during which police asked stranded drivers to just wait out the rain. However, life-threatening concerns were prioritized using 911 and tow services, officials said.

The National Weather Service issued an urban and small stream flood advisory, which ended at 12:15 a.m. Monday.
