OGDEN, Utah (AP) -- Weber State broke out of its scoring funk with a 24-13 victory over instate rival Southern Utah University on Saturday night, after two weeks of futility.
The Wildcats (1-2), who had failed to score a touchdown in their first two games, played catchup against the Thunderbirds (2-1), whose defense surrendered a touchdown for the first time this season.
Trevyn Smith put the game out of reach with a 37-yard touchdown run on the Wildcats first possession of the second half, to make it 17-7.
Smith streaked up the middle of the field, outrunning four Thunderbirds defenders, for the score.
Another third-quarter run by Smith, this time for 20-yards, set up a 2-yard Marcus Mailei touchdown run to make it 24-7.
Weber State scored its first touchdown of the season with two minutes to play in the first quarter. Woods connected with a wide-open Matt Loewen deep in the right corner of the end zone.
Larue Burley evened it at 7-7 with a 78-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, but he was ejected soon after two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties. Both were for excessive celebration, as Burley first for dove into the end zone and then jabbered as he walked back toward SUUs bench.
Brett Johansen made it 24-13 with 12:29 remaining, on a 6-yard pass from Wes Marshall. B.A. Harrell blocked the extra-point attempt.
Conor Foley put the Wildcats up 10-7 with a 22-yard field goal at the end of the first half.
