LONDON, Oct 28, 2004 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- A British survey has determined a traditional breakfast of cereal, toast and tea can lead to people becoming "vertically ill," The Telegraph reported Thursday.

Nutritionist and author Patrick Holford conducted the Internet survey of 37,000 people about their eating habits and overall health, and said the findings highlighted the links between mood and food in ordinary, healthy people.

The poll found those who ate the most sugar, wheat, salt and caffeine had the lowest energy levels. About 44 percent of respondents reported a range of symptoms including low energy, irregular bowel movements, high stress, bloating and depression.

Those who ate plenty of fruit, vegetables and drank lots of water felt the fittest, healthiest and happiest, the survey found.

"The survey shows that most people are 'vertically ill' -- still upright but not feeling great," said Holford.
