Author Angelou joins 'Oprah' on satellite

CHICAGO, Sep 13, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- Author Maya Angelou has signed with XM Satellite Radio to host a weekly show on the new "Oprah & Friends" channel produced by Harpo Radio in Chicago.

During Angelou's show on XM channel 156, which debuts Sept. 25, the best-selling author will share stories about her life and her philosophy about race, sex, age and religion, an XM news release said.

Angelou wrote an autobiography, "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings," and poetry collection, "Just Give Me a Cool Drink of Water 'Fore I Diiie," which was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize.

She has written, produced, directed and starred in film, stage and television productions, and received an Emmy nomination in 1977 for Best Supporting Actress in "Roots."

In January 1993, she read an original poem at the presidential inauguration.

"Oprah & Friends" will offer original programming on a variety of topics. Other hosts include Bob Greene, Dr. Mehmet Oz, Dr. Robin Smith, Marianne Williamson, Nate Berkus, Jean Chatzky and Gayle King.
