A foundry in southern Poland is "putting the finishing touches" to a six-metre (nearly 20-foot) monument to Polish composer Frederic Chopin to be displayed in a park in Shanghai, the foundry's head told AFP on Wednesday.

The two-and-a-half-tonne bronze sculpture was designed by the Chinese artist Lu Pin, a graduate of the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts in Poland.

Work on the monument began in January and should be completed by the end of this week, said Czeslaw Loranty, director of the foundry in the southwestern city of Gliwice.

It will then be transported to Poland's northern Baltic coast for shipping to China, he added.

The work, destined for Shanghai's Su Yatsen Park, was commissioned by a Sino-Polish committee of former ambassadors and financed by a Chinese company operating in Poland.
