(KSL News) -- You could be eating crushed up bugs and not even know it, but the F-D-A thinks you should.

A new proposal from the Food and Drug Administration, would require Food and Cosmetic labels to list red dyes called "cochineal extract" or "carmine."

These are extracts made from ground up bodies of a beetle-like insect. The red dyes are used in some ice creams, maraschino cherries, even lipstick.

FDA's proposal was prompted by dozens of reports of hypersensitivity to the colorings.
