Veteran actresses LAUREN BACALL and BLYTHE DANNER have been honoured with the inaugural awards at a Philadelphia, Pennsylvania college's new KATHARINE HEPBURN centre.

The Bryn Mawr College officially opened its Katherine Houghton Hepburn Center, set up to pay tribute to the independent spirit of the late actress and her feminist campaigning mother KATHARINE HOUGHTON HEPBURN. Both women attended the college.

On Saturday (10SEP06), Bacall and Danner, mother of GWYNETH PALTROW, were both awarded Katharine Hepburn medals honouring them as strong female role models.

Bacall, whose son SAM ROBARDS was her friend Hepburn's godson, said, "I was privileged to see her close up and to know her."

Danner added, "I feel as if I still have a long, long way to go before I earn this."
