A British orchestra said Monday it had become the first major ensemble in the world to launch a regular podcast.

The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra's free 30-minute download includes music clips as well as the latest news on the ensemble and interviews and discussions with conductors and musicians.

Each month, different sections of the orchestra will be featured and two members of a CBSO concert audience will review a performance.

The podcast is designed to give listeners a taste of behind-the-scenes life in the orchestra.

"CBSO is the first major symphony orchestra in the world to launch a regular podcast," a spokeswoman said.

"Podcasting offers a direct personal route to classical music fans and novices alike and I'm delighted that the CBSO is pioneering a new approach to broadening our audience."

She said the podcast was available to download from their website, http://www.cbso.co.uk/.

Free receiving software allows people to pick podcasts from online directories, download them to any MP3 player such as an Apple iPod -- hence the term "podcast" -- and listen to them at their leisure.
