OGDEN, Utah -- The Weber State defense turned in a very impressive effort on Saturday night against Cal Poly, but offensive mistakes proved costly as the Mustangs (2-0) downed the Wildcats 17-0 at Stewart Stadium.

The 'Cats held the Cal Poly offense, which put up 44 points a week ago against Northern Colorado, to only 10 points and 239 yards. The first points of the game, a one-yard touchdown plunge by Cal-Poly running back James Noble, technically went against the defense, but the score was actually given up by the offense.

On the Wildcats' first play from scrimmage, quarterback Ian Pizarro tossed a lateral swing pass behind Adrian Conway. The ball hit the turf and was gathered in by the Mustangs, who scored one play later.

The 'Stangs were held in check until late in the third quarter, when Nick Coromelas connected on a 26-yard field goal.

The final score of the day came on a 42-yard interception return by Mark Restelli with 2:22 left in the contest. The pick came on the first pass by Pizarro, after he re-entered the game after being replaced by Shawn Woods for several series.

The 'Cats (0-2) were held to 150 total yards by the Mustang defense, who has yet to give up any points in two contests this year.

Freshman running back Trevyn Smith was a bright spot for the Wildcat offense. The Springville, Utah native gained 81 yards on 15 carries after replacing starter Adrian Conway.

Woods hit on five of six pass attempts, but only totaled 25 yards. Pizarro completed only two of nine passes for 51 yards, 41 of which came on a strike to Marky Filipe in the first half.

Filipe caught three passes for 60 yards to lead the Wildcat receiving corps.

Noble rushed for 110 yards on 27 carries, and quarterback Matt Brennan rushed for 49 yards on 14 carries for Cal Poly. Brennan also gained 75 yards passing, as he hit on 4 of 12 attempts. Three of Brennan's passes were hauled in by wideout Ramses Barden, who gained 49 yards.

Weber State will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 16 as they take on in-state rival Southern Utah at 7:00 p.m.
