Sudanese President Omar al-Beshir has freed two women opposition politicians jailed after protests against rising fuel prices, his spokesman said Friday.
Meriam al-Mahdi, daughter of former prime minister Sadeq al-Mahdi, and Marwa Manoun, both leading members of the opposition Umma party, were released on the president's orders, his press secretary Mahjoub Fadul Badry told AFP.
The two women had been sentenced to two months' and one month's imprisonment respectively at Thursday's trial.
They were among dozens of demonstrators who received custodial sentences from the Khartoum criminal courts over Wednesday's demonstration in the capital.
Police used teargas and batons to halt the march called to protest cuts in the state subsidies on sugar and fuel.
