FUGITIVE SOUGHT BY FEDS FOUND SLEEPING ON PORCH

LACONIA, N.H. (AP) — Authorities in New Hampshire weren't sleeping on the job when they set out to nab their “fugitive of the week.” But the same couldn't be said about the target of their search. A man sought by the U.S. Marshals Service was found sleeping on a porch in Laconia. Authorities say 55-year-old John Cathcart was being sought on multiple arrest warrants — which included failure to appear on a charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm and skipping out on three outstanding drug charges. After Cathcart was featured in a segment on local media and had his name and description distributed throughout the state, residents were alert, though the suspect wasn't. Authorities say a series of interviews led them to the porch where they found Cathcart dozing. He was arrested without incident.

NEW ORLEANS MUSICIAN OFFERS TRUMPETS IN EXCHANGE FOR GUNS

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A New Orleans musician would rather hear the sound of a novice struggling to play the trumpet than the sound of gunfire. And Shamaar Allen is doing his part to make that happen. He's offering kids free trumpets in exchange for their guns. The unusual swap program was started last week after a 9-year-old boy was shot to death and two teenagers wounded by gunfire. Allen says he has a 9-year-old boy and remembers growing up in an area where there's often little for young people to do — but get in trouble. After getting approval from the police, Allen put the offer on his Instagram account and before long, gave away all the spare horns he had. Others have joined the effort, donating instruments or money to buy them. Some musicians have offered free lessons for those who get the free horns.
