TOKYO (AP) — The 42 venues for next year’s delayed Tokyo Olympics have been secured and the competition schedule will remain almost identical to the one that would have been used this year. The Athletes Village and the main press center have also been lined up. That was the message delivered to IOC members today by the Tokyo organizing committee’s president and CEO. They spoke from Japan to a full session of the IOC membership meeting online. Estimates in Japan say the delay will cost $2 billion to $6 billion. Officials have not given a cost estimate. The Olympics are to open on July 23, 2021.
GENEVA (AP) — International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach is warning against Olympic boycotts. China’s human rights record is an expected target ahead of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. Some lawmakers and diplomats have criticized China for its detention and treatment of its Muslim minority Uighur people and pro-democracy activists in Hong Kong. The issue is personal for Bach, who won a gold medal in team fencing at the 1976 Montreal Olympics but could not defend the title when West Germany joined the United States and others in refusing to send teams to the 1980 Moscow Games. Bach said today that the only political effect the boycott of 1980 had was to trigger a revenge boycott of the following Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
TOKYO (AP) — Leaders of a newly formed athletes group are calling for a change to the rule that bars certain protests at the Olympics. They say it “is in fact preventing athletes from displaying Olympism at the Olympic Games.” The board of The Athletics Association says it wants changes that will allow athletes to “peacefully protest against social injustices in the world.” Among the members of the association are Allyson Felix, Christian Taylor, Emma Coburn, Shaunae Miller-Uibo and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce.
CHICAGO (AP) — Star third baseman Yoán Moncada has rejoined the Chicago White Sox after missing the start of their summer camp because he contracted the coronavirus. Moncada revealed he tested positive for COVID-19 on a video conference call with reporters yesterday. He said he lost his sense of smell and taste for a few days but didn’t experience any major symptoms and feels good now. He worked out at the ballpark with the team yesterday and hopes to be in the lineup for the July 24 season opener against Minnesota.
UNDATED (AP) — The NCAA has released its latest guidance to help member schools navigate competition during the coronavirus pandemic, and they come as the prospects of actually playing look grim. The NCAA says college football players should be tested for COVID-19 at least 72 hours before a game, players with high-risk exposures should be quarantined for 14 days and everybody on the sideline should wear a mask. NCAA President Mark Emmert says that if there is to be college sports in the fall, they need to get a much better handle on the pandemic.
