ELECTION 2020-THE LATEST

Donald Trump, Joe Biden win Louisiana's presidential primary

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden have won Louisiana’s twice-postponed presidential primary. Trump faced no true challenger for the Republican nomination, but four other GOP contenders ran against him on Louisiana’s ballot Saturday. Biden faced 13 other Democrats on the ballot, though he already had locked up enough delegates in other states to become the party’s nominee. Louisiana had one of the nation’s last presidential primaries. It was delayed twice from its original April 4 date because of the coronavirus pandemic and was pushed back so many months that it became irrelevant to the selection the party nominees.

Okinawa governor wants tougher action as 61 Marines infected

TOKYO (AP) — The governor of Japan’s Okinawa is demanding a top U.S. military commander take tougher prevention measures and more transparency hours after officials were told that more than 60 Marines at two bases have been infected over the past few days. Okinawan officials reported a total of 61 cases _ 38 at Marine Corps Air Station Futenma and another 23 at Camp Hansen _ since July 7. They say U.S. military officials told them the two bases have since been put in lockdown. The disclosure of the exact figures came only after Okinawa’s repeated requests to the U.S. military. Gov. Denny Tamaki held telephone talks with Lt. Gen. H. Stacy Clardy, commander of III Marine Expeditionary Force, to demand the U.S military take stronger action.

The Latest: Nevada lawmakers suspend session over virus case

Nevada lawmakers have pumped the brakes on their emergency special session because someone in the legislative building has tested positive for the coronavirus. Gov. Steve Sisolak has convened the session so lawmakers can balance the state budget amid a projected $1.2 billion shortfall stemming from the economic damage of the pandemic. But on Friday staff members announced that someone in the building is infected with the virus, though the person shows no symptoms. On Saturday, 13 Nevada lawmakers decided they would now participate remotely in the emergency session and both chambers agreed to recess until Monday morning. That will give time for legislators time to get tested and staff to answer a long list of questions that lawmakers have asked in hearings.

VIRUS OUTBREAK-ASIA

Asia Today: No masks on red carpet as Taiwan logs few cases

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — Taiwan has wrapped up an annual film festival with an awards ceremony as it holds more public events after keeping its coronavirus outbreak to a few hundred cases. Actors and others lined up for photo shoots with no social distancing on Saturday night, and participants didn’t wear masks in historic Zhongshan Hall in Taipei. Taiwan, with a population of about 23 million people, has had 451 confirmed cases and seven deaths. A baseball game in the city of Taichung on Saturday drew more than 10,000 fans for the first time this season. Health authorities said last week that fans would be allowed to sit in alternate seats and no longer would have to wear masks, except when leaving their seats.

2 officers killed in shootout in south Texas border town

MCALLEN, Texas (AP) — Authorities say two police officers have been shot and killed in a South Texas border town after reportedly responding to a disturbance call. Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman Lt. Christopher Olivarez says both of the McAllen police officers were shot Saturday on the south side of the city and transported to an area hospital. Olivarez says DPS sent troopers to secure the scene after the McAllen Police Department asked them for assistance. He noted that his agency received a call about the incident around 4:30 p.m. An investigation is ongoing. No further information was immediately available.

Officials say she is assigned to the Redhawks of Training Squadron 21 in Kingsville, Texas.

Trump wears mask in public for first time during pandemic

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump wore a mask during a visit to a military hospital on Saturday. It's the first time the president has been seen in public with the type of facial covering recommended by health officials as a precaution against spreading or becoming infected by the novel coronavirus. Trump flew by helicopter to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in suburban Washington to meet wounded servicemembers and health care providers caring for COVID-19 patients. As he left the White House, he told reporters: “When you’re in a hospital, especially ... I think it’s a great thing to wear a mask.”

Trump's defiant help for Stone adds to tumult in Washington

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump’s intervention into a criminal case connected to his own conduct is drawing fierce rebukes from Democrats and a few lonely Republicans, with calls for investigations and legislation. But it remains to be seen if Trump’s most recent defiance of the conventions of his office to commute the sentence of political confidant Roger Stone will matter to voters grappling with a deadly COVID-19 surge and a national discourse on racial justice. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is calling it “an act of staggering corruption." She says legislation is needed to prevent a president from pardoning or commuting the sentence of someone who acted to shield that president from prosecution.

Tucker Carlson writer resigns after racist posts revealed

NEW YORK (AP) — Tucker Carlson’s top writer has resigned from Fox News after secretly posting racist and sexist remarks online. CNN reported Friday that writer Blake Neff used a pseudonym to post bigoted comments about Black and Asian people, as well as women, on the online forum AutoAdmit. Neff began working on “Tucker Carlson Tonight” in 2016 and was known as Carlson’s top writer. Neff previously worked as a reporter for the right-wing news outlet The Daily Caller, which Carlson co-founded. Fox News executives on Saturday said they condemned Neff’s “horrendous and deeply offensive” comments.

VIRUS OUTBREAK-RESCUING BEES

Even during pandemic beekeeping remains an essential service

WASHINGTON (AP) — The nation's capital has declared beekeepers to be essential workers during the coronavirus outbreak. Spring and summer is when beehives will “swarm,” meaning a queen will take half the hive to make a new hive. If the swarm isn’t collected by a beekeeper, the new hive can come to settle in residential backyards, attics, crawlspaces or other potentially ruinous areas. And that can create a stinging, scary nuisance. Beekeepers respond to swarms and carefully transplant them to designated areas such as community gardens, rooftops and even embassies in Washington. Collecting swarms of bees is challenging at any time, and even more so during a pandemic.
