UNDATED (AP) — South Korea is considering including religious facilities on the same list with nightclubs, hostess bars and karaoke rooms as “high risk” venues for the spread of COVID-19 following a slew of transmissions tied to church gatherings. South Korean Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun said during a virus meeting on Wednesday that more than 40% of the country’s newly confirmed infections over the previous three days have been traced back to places of worship. He pleaded people to refrain from religious gatherings and criticized churches and other facilities for failing to implement proper preventive measures, such as requiring followers to wear masks and sit apart during services.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tennessee officials say they plan to enforce a requirement that first-time voters who register by mail cast their ballots in person. That's despite a judge’s ruling in early June that all eligible voters can cast absentee ballots during the coronavirus pandemic, but doesn't directly address the first-time voters restriction. The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law sought to block that law in a mid-June federal court filing, saying it’s unclear if the state judge’s order allows that group to vote by mail. The state responded that it and county officials acted as though the first-time voting requirement “would apply as usual in the upcoming elections.”
DENVER (AP) — Former Colorado Sen. John Hickenlooper has won the Democratic Senate primary. Hickenlooper will now face Republican Sen. Cory Gardner in November. Gardner is seen as the most vulnerable Republican in the Senate. Hickenlooper beat former Colorado House Speaker Andrew Romanoff in the Democratic primary. Hickenlooper is a moderate recruited by national Democrats who had a huge financial advantage in the race. But he stumbled in the final month against Romanoff, a former moderate who ran a populist challenge from the left.
TULSA, Okla. (AP) — The police chief in Tulsa, Oklahoma, says one of the two officers who were shot during a traffic stop has died. Police Chief Wendell Franklin says Sgt. Craig Johnson died Tuesday. He says Johnson was shot multiple times and he described Johnson's death as a “tremendous loss” to the police department. Johnson and rookie officer Aurash Zarkeshan were shot at about 3:30 a.m. Monday during a traffic stop. The suspected gunman, 32-year-old David Anthony Ware, was arrested following a search that lasted more than seven hours. He faces murder and weapons charges.
NEW YORK (AP) — New York state's attorney general and lawyers in a class-action lawsuit say Harvey Weinstein and his former studio’s board have reached a nearly $19 million settlement with dozens of sexual misconduct accusers. The agreement was announced late Tuesday by New York Attorney General Letitia James and Chicago attorney Elizabeth Fegan. The deal lets women make claims of between $7,500 and $750,000. It would resolve claims in a New York state lawsuit and a class-action lawsuit pending in federal court. The former Hollywood producer was convicted earlier this year of rape and sexual assault against two women. Accusations by dozens of women in 2017 destroyed his career and gave rise to #MeToo, the global movement to hold powerful men accountable for their sexual misconduct.
