Utah sees 203 new cases of COVID-19 as total reported cases climbs over 10K

Utah's number of total COVID-19 cases has eclipsed 10,000 as the pandemic continues into its fourth month. The number of COVID-19 cases in Utah increased by 203 from Monday, with one new reported death, according to the Utah Department of Health. Tuesday’s totals give Utah 10,202 total confirmed cases, with 801 total hospitalizations and 113 total deaths from the disease. How to go rock climbing outside safely during a global pandemic

From the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, local climbing organizations have encouraged rock climbers to avoid climbing until the virus was less prevalent. Nonetheless, with Utah restrictions lifting, combined with perfect spring climbing temperatures, climbers are wondering how they can safely get back out onto boulders and crags. "As the stay-at-home orders have (relaxed), we have (encouraged climbers) to follow the health guidelines by keeping crowds at bay, using hand sanitizer, cleaning climbing gear as much as possible, climbing only with people in their household and staying within their own party of people," Julia Geisler, Executive Director of the Salt Lake Climbers Alliance told KSL.com. — Cara MacDonald, KSL.com Contributor

Deseret Industries opening some stores this week

Deseret Industries, the nonprofit business owned and operated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, will open some stores this week with social distancing restrictions, the church said Tuesday. All locations have been closed since March 17, but most stores will start opening this week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Staff will wear masks and gloves, and customers are also encouraged to wear masks. The number of people allowed inside stores will be limited for social distancing purposes. Signs and stickers on floors will direct customers to follow social distancing measures. Stores will be cleaned more frequently, and carts will be cleaned between uses. Fitting rooms, restrooms and drinking fountains will be temporarily closed at the stores. The stores also will only be restocked outside of business hours. Customers are asked not to sit on furniture while shopping. In addition, people will be allowed to donate items by appointment only. Mattresses and box springs will no longer be accepted. Donated items will be quarantined after stores receive them. Donors are encouraged to wear masks and are asked to wait in their cars until it is time for them to drop off their items. “We’re looking forward to reopening our stores so we can better serve our communities,” Deseret Industries manager of operations Brent Palmer said in a news release. “We have missed seeing our stores filled with shoppers and donors, and we’ve missed being able to work side by side with our associates.” More information about the stores reopening is available at deseretindustries.org/reopen. — Jacob Klopfenstein, KSL.com

China delayed releasing coronavirus info, frustrating WHO

Throughout January, the World Health Organization publicly praised China for what it called a speedy response to the new coronavirus. It repeatedly thanked the Chinese government for sharing the genetic map of the virus “immediately,” and said its work and commitment to transparency were “very impressive and beyond words.” But behind the scenes, it was a much different story, one of significant delays by China and considerable frustration among WHO officials over not getting the information they needed to fight the spread of the deadly virus, The Associated Press has found. — Associated Press

Utah’s number of COVID-19 cases increased by 202 on Monday, with no new reported deaths, according to the Utah Department of Health.

Federal health authorities have received reports of nearly 26,000 nursing home residents dying from COVID-19, according to materials prepared for the nation's governors. That number is partial and likely to go higher.

People who don’t have health insurance will now be able to get tested for COVID-19 through Medicaid, Utah health officials announced Monday.
