Switzerland's oldest woman has died aged 110, a lifespan she put down to good food and plenty of sleep, local authorities announced on Monday.

Anna Ringier "went to sleep peacefully" on Sunday at her home in the northern Swiss community of Zofingen, officials at the town hall said.

Besides a good, regular dose of sleep, Ringier had attributed her longevity to a diet of cured meat, they said.

Born on a farm on April 12, 1896, Ringier was widowed 76 years ago. She lived out her final years at the home of her 80-year-old son.

Federal Switzerland has no central population register, making it hard to say with certainty who can now claim to be the country's oldest woman.

One of the contenders is Rosa Rein, who at 109 is the oldest woman in the southern region of Ticino.

Ecuadoran Maria Esther Heredia Lecaro, named as the oldest person in the world by the Guinness book of records, died late last month at the age of 116.
