UNDATED (AP) — Mexico has reported its largest one-day rise in coronavirus cases, with 2,409. Assistant Health Secretary Hugo López-Gatell said the country is at “the most difficult” moment in the pandemic. It was the first time in Mexico that the number of new cases exceeded 2,000 in one day. In percentage terms, the 6% increase was not the biggest one-day jump. Officials also reported 257 more deaths from COVID-19, for a total of 4,477 since the pandemic began. There have been higher one-day death tolls this week. López-Gatell said there are “tendencies of decline” in some parts of the country. But there also are signs that hospital capacity is nearing its limit in Mexico City, the country’s hardest-hit area.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal health officials are warning about potential accuracy problems with a rapid test for COVID-19 made by Abbott Laboratories. The 15-minute test has been distributed to thousands of testing sites across the U.S. and is used daily at the White House. The Food and Drug Administration said Thursday it is investigating early data suggesting Abbott's ID NOW test can miss COVID-19 cases caught by rival tests. The warning came one day after researchers at New York University reported “unacceptable” results for the test in a 100-patient study. President Donald Trump has repeatedly hailed the test as a “game changer.”

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. health officials have released part of some long-delayed specific guidance that schools, businesses, and other organizations can use as states reopen from coronavirus shutdowns. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Thursday posted a set of six “decision tool” documents. The one-page documents use traffic signs and other graphics to tell organizations things to consider before reopening. The CDC has prepared more extensive, and more specific, guidance. That has not been posted. The CDC drafted the guidance more than a month ago and it was initially shelved by the Trump administration.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A federal appeals court has revived a lawsuit accusing President Donald Trump of illegally profiting off the presidency through his luxury Washington hotel. The lawsuit brought by the state of Maryland and the District of Columbia claims Trump has violated the emoluments clause of the Constitution by accepting profits through foreign and domestic officials who stay at the Trump International Hotel. The hotel located just blocks from the White House quickly became a hot spot for lobbyists and foreign officials after it reopened in 2016 shortly before Trump was elected president.

GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) — The Mississippi Gaming Commission says casinos in the state can start reopening May 21. That's more than two months after the commission closed them because of the coronavirus pandemic. The reopening is allowed just before the Memorial Day weekend, which usually marks the beginning of the summer tourist season. The Gaming Commission executive director, Allen Godfrey, told news outlets Thursday that the commission will issue an order Friday with safety guidelines for reopening. The commission closed Mississippi casinos March 16. Casinos can start reopening Monday in most parts of Louisiana, but not in New Orleans.
