Former Ute Tyler Huntley impresses in unofficial pro day event

SALT LAKE CITY — NFL agent Yossi Behar tweeted that Utah quarterback Tyler Huntley had participated in an unofficial pro day to show off his talents in preparation for the NFL draft, which will take place in late April.

Huntley measured in at 6-foot-1 and 207 pounds, and was timed in the 40-yard dash, shuttle-run, three-cone drill, broad jump and vertical jump.

Although each of Huntley’s measurables were unofficial, his performance was great. His time in the 40-yard dash would’ve ranked him as the top time for NFL Combine quarterbacks, clocking in at 4.56 seconds. His time would’ve beat current leader Cole McDonald from Hawaii by .02 seconds.

Huntley also chalked up a 4.31 second shuttle-run and a 6.84 three-cone drill in the video posted on March 30. These times would’ve also had him at the top of his draft class in each event. His jumping abilities also piqued the interest of those watching as he jumped a 10.85-foot broad jump while also having a 43.5-inch vertical.

The 2019 season was the year Huntley broke out as one of the most dominant quarterbacks in Utah history, throwing for 19 touchdowns and four interceptions on the season. He totaled five rushing touchdowns for the Utes in his senior showcase and finished the year ranked third in Utah’s all-time wins category.

Huntley’s also broke two school records with a 73% completion percentage and a 177.5 passer rating in 2019. But the most impressive part of Huntley’s senior year was his ability to control an offense centered around another member of the Hallandale Trio, Zack Moss.

Huntley was named a first team All-Pac-12, PFF Third-Team All-American, and co-Pac 12 Offensive Player of the Year by the Associated Press. He was a finalist for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award and the Manning Award while also finishing as a semifinalist for the Walter Camp Player of the Year Award, Davey O’Brian Award and the Lombardi Award.

Huntley’s 6-foot-1 frame is small compared to other top quarterbacks in the country. For instance, Utah State’s Jordan Love and Colorado’s Steven Montez measured in at 6-foot-4, Oregon’s Justin Herbert and Washington’s Jacob Eason stand at 6-foot-6, and LSU’s Joe Burrow is 6-foot-3.

There are other great quarterbacks on the smaller end of the spectrum that participated in the NFL Combine, including Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa, Georgia’s Jake Fromm and Oklahoma’s Jalen Hurts measuring in at 6-foot, 6-foot-2 and 6-foot-1, respectively.

Huntley missed eight games due to injury during his four seasons at the University of Utah, but he played his senior season virtually injury free.
