ADRENALINEVILLE — For anyone who knows me, they know I love movies.
When people ask what I do outside of work, I don't have the typical answers that most people do of, "I love being outdoors," or "When I'm not working I'm skiing," or even, "Get me out of the office and I love to cook."
No, what I say is, "Movies." They ask me to elaborate and I can't because it's just movies in general; watching them, reading about them, analyzing them, researching them. I know it's sad, but it's true.
However, as much as I enjoy movies, I have to admit there are times real life is much more entertaining, dramatic and thrilling than any cinematic experience, and this video ranks up there.
This footage was captured back in November of 2019, and it shows the dramatic rescue of a surfer in Portugal.
Professional surfer Lucas Chumbo was surfing in Nazare, Portugal. Chumbo rides a big wave and then waits for his teammate, Ian Cosenza, to pick him up on the Jet Ski. Things seem normal, but soon another massive wave starts forming and is about to come down on top of both men.
Cosenza races to Chumbo, who grasps on to the sled at the back of the watercraft, and the two try to get out of the way. It's like a scripted disaster movie as you see the wave right on the heels of the pair threatening to cause some serious damage.
The wave breaks, but then the whitewater catches up with them and totally engulfs the team. Cosenza keeps driving and manages to get them out of there to safety. According to the YouTube description, the whitewater was moving at 60 mph.
The whole video is quite dramatic and gets your heart racing, but it's not the wave, the rescue or the danger that makes this video for me. That prize goes to the high five Cosenza and Chumbo attempt after they're out of the worst of it, but not totally out of danger. Sometimes something is so amazing that a high five just can't wait.
