BEIJING (AP) — Japan has reported 41 new cases of a virus on a cruise ship that's been quarantined in Yokohama harbor while the death toll in mainland China rose to 636, including a doctor who got in trouble with authorities in the communist country for sounding an early warning about the disease threat. Two docked cruise ships with thousands of passengers and crew members remained under 14-day quarantines in Hong Kong and Japan. Before Friday's 41 confirmed cases, 20 passengers who were found infected with the virus were escorted off the Diamond Princess at Yokohama near Tokyo. About 3,700 people are confined aboard the ship. A newborn discovered infected 36 hours after birth has become the youngest known patient.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The chairman of the Democratic National Committee is calling for a “recanvass” of the results of the Iowa caucuses. Party leader Tom Perez tweeted Thursday that “enough is enough” after three days of technical issues and delays. Following the Iowa Democratic Party's release of new results late Thursday night, former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg leads Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders by two state delegate equivalents out of 2,152 counted. However, there is evidence the party has not accurately tabulated some of its results, including those released late Thursday that the party reported as complete. The Associated Press is unable to declare a winner.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Former national security adviser John Bolton is slated to speak at Tennessee's Vanderbilt University later this month alongside another former national security adviser, Susan Rice. Bolton's appearance on Feb. 19 comes after the U.S. Senate declined to subpoena Bolton to testify during President Donald Trump's impeachment trial. That trial ended in Trump's acquittal this week. Bolton served as national security adviser to Trump and was U.S. ambassador to the United Nations under President George W. Bush. Bolton has a book scheduled for release in March and details from the book's manuscript have roiled Washington.

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The chief architect of the U.S. blueprint to resolve the decades-old Israeli-Palestinian conflict is blaming Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas for soaring tensions and violence in the occupied West Bank since the plan's release last week. Jared Kushner said Thursday that leaders who are ready for a state “don’t call for days of rage and encourage their people to pursue violence if they’re not getting what they want.” The son-in-law and adviser to President Donald Trump said he thinks Abbas “was surprised with how good the plan was for the Palestinian people" but locked himself into rejecting it before it came out.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The 21-year-old man accused of killing 22 people and wounding two dozen more in a shooting that targeted Mexicans in the border city of El Paso, Texas, has been charged with federal hate crimes. An indictment unsealed Thursday charges Patrick Crusius with 90 counts under federal hate crime and firearms laws. Federal prosecutors announced the charges at a Thursday afternoon news conference in El Paso. The Department of Justice will consult with the defense and victims' families before deciding if they will pursue a death penalty. Ultimately, the decision is up to Attorney General William Barr. Crusius already faces a potential death sentence in a state capital murder case.
