HERRIMAN — An unborn child died on Monday after a pregnant woman was critically injured in an auto-pedestrian crash, police said on Tuesday.
An eastbound 2015 gray Kia Optima struck a 20-year-old pregnant woman shortly after 7:15 a.m. Monday at the intersection of 4805 W. 11800 South, Herriman Police Lt. Cody Stromberg said in a statement.
The woman was transported to a local hospital in critical condition, where authorities learned she was nearing the end of the second trimester of her pregnancy.
The unborn child died from injuries suffered in the collision, Stromberg said. The woman underwent surgery and was upgraded to stable condition; she is expected to survive her injuries.
The Kia’s driver stayed on scene and has fully cooperated with investigators, Stromberg said.
No charges had been filed against the man as of Tuesday.
Investigators were working to reconstruct the crash and examine “the events leading up to this tragedy,” Stromberg said.
The investigation could last up to several weeks or months, he added. Once the investigation is finalized, the case will be reviewed with the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office, where it will be determined if criminal charges will be filed.
There is a marked crosswalk at the intersection as well as safety devices, Stromberg said. Authorities are investigating if the woman was in the crosswalk or had used any of the safety devices prior to the incident.
