ROBERT DE NIRO DEFIES CRITICS ON POLITICS
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Robert De Niro is ignoring people who say actors, singers and athletes shouldn’t speak about politics. He says he has the right to do so as a citizen — and has a responsibility to do so as a celebrity. De Niro says all Americans have the right to protest. And he says as a celebrity he should use his platform because he knows others will listen to him. De Niro made his comments last night in Los Angeles as he accepted a lifetime achievement award from the Screen Actors Guild.

“PARASITE” WINS ENSEMBLE AWARD AT SAGs
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Usually after the Screen Actors Guild awards, the Oscar picture gets a little clearer. But after last night’s ceremony in Los Angeles, things are a bit muddled when it comes to the race for best movie. The winner for best ensemble performance was “Parasite.” The foreign-language movie about class warfare in Korea wasn’t in the forefront of the talk about best picture Oscar contenders. But the win last night raises hopes that this year’s Oscars might be the first to recognize a foreign-language film as best picture.

RECENT HISTORY COULD DOOM “PARASITE”
LOS ANGELES (AP) — How do you kill off a “Parasite” that has a shot of winning the best picture Oscar? Recent history might do the trick. The foreign language film boosted its odds by winning the Screen Actors Guild award for best ensemble last night. The win’s impact on the Oscar’s race might be tempered by the fact that the last two SAG ensemble winners went on to lose for best picture. Last year, “Black Panther” fell short and in 2018, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” couldn’t seal the deal.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Their marriage may be over. But last night it was clear that the friendship and professional ties between Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston remain tight. Each won awards at the Screen Actors Guild last night. When Pitt won his, he got an appreciative gaze from his ex in the audience. And when Aniston won, Pitt waited backstage to congratulate her.

JOAQUIN PHOENIX CITES LEDGER AT SAG WIN
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Joaquin Phoenix stood on his own two feet when he accepted his SAG award for best actor last night. But he told the audience at the Shrine Auditorium he was really standing on the shoulders of the man who became famous for the Joker role before him. Phoenix gave a posthumous shout-out to Heath Ledger. Ledger died of an accidental overdose, soon after filming his Joker role in the 2008 movie “The Dark Knight.”

SAG AWARDS - TV
LOS ANGELES (AP) — “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” continues to wow ‘em at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. It has won for best comedy for a second straight year. The Amazon show also earned Tony Shalhoub (shah-LOOB') an acting win. Both he and series star Rachel Brosnahan paid tribute to deceased cast member Brian Tarantina.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — "Bad Boys” is the nation’s leading film going into today’s final day of the extended Martin Luther King holiday. The third edition of the Will Smith-Martin Lawrence franchise earned $59 million domestically. If it follows the pattern of the past three days, it may meet its studio’s estimate for the long weekend. Finishing second is “Dolittle,” followed by “1917.”

PRINCE HARRY EXPOUNDS ON ROYAL RIFT
LONDON (AP) — Prince Harry is blaming the constant scrutiny of the media for his decision to turn his back on his royal duties — and head for Canada. Harry says the attention he and Meghan Markle get from reporters and paparazzi give them “no other option” than bail of the spotlight. In a speech yesterday, Harry said he and Meghan wanted to keep some royal responsibilities, but they weren’t allowed to. The couple’s announcement caused a rift among those in the royal family — and apparently that led to the part of the decision for them to be stripped of their royal duties — and their public funding.

JAZZ MUSICIAN JIMMY HEATH DIES
NEW YORK (AP) — Musician Jimmy Heath has died. He was a jazz saxophonist and composer who played alongside greats like Miles Davis and John Coltrane. Later in his career, he formed a family group, the Heath Brothers. Heath was 93 years old.
