TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — Kira Lewis Jr. scored 25 points and Alabama handed No. 4 Auburn its first loss of the season with an 83-64 rout. The Crimson Tide led wire-to-wire over their in-state rival. The Tigers had a miserable shooting night and left No. 7 San Diego State as the nation's last unbeaten team. It was the Tide's first win over a Top 5 team since a 79-57 home defeat of then-No. 5 Texas A&M on Dec. 30, 2017. This one was largely one-sided, too.
ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — Freshman Anthony Edwards scored 20 of his 26 points in the first half, pushing Georgia to a big lead that carried the Bulldogs to an 80-63 victory over Tennessee. After a brutal three-game stretch against ranked teams, Georgia romped past the Volunteers. With Edwards hitting from all over the court, Georgia built a 47-28 lead that essentially settled this one by halftime. Rayshaun Hammonds added 21 points for Georgia, which claimed its 11th win to matched its total from all of last season. Losing for the first time in three games, Tennessee was led by Jordan Bowden with 12 points.
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina point guard Tyasha Harris says the Gamecocks didn't do much celebrating after ascending to the No. 1 ranking in the country. Harris knows the Gamecocks have a challenging road ahead the next two months before postseason play begins. South Carolina is the fourth team to hold the No. 1 ranking this season. The shuffling mirrors what's going on in men's basketball, which has had six different teams ranked No. 1. Gamecocks coach Dawn Staley believes her team has areas to in which to improve but likes how players have handled success this week with in practice.
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) — Jimmy Whitt Jr. scored a career-high 30 points to lead Arkansas to a 75-55 win over Vanderbilt on Wednesday night. Whitt, a graduate transfer from SMU, scored 17 points in the first half to help the Razorbacks to a 34-28 lead at halftime. Saben Lee led Vanderbilt with 17 points, all in the second half, and Maxwell Evans added 16, all in the first half. The Commodores have lost 23 straight SEC games.
STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) — Mississippi State running back Kylin Hill and linebacker Erroll Thompson have decided to return to school for their senior seasons rather than enter the NFL draft. Mississippi State announced Thursday that both Hill and Thompson are staying with the Bulldogs and both offered their reasons on Twitter. This decision represents a reversal for Hill. The first-team all-Southeastern Conference running back had said last month that he was entering the draft. Hill and Thompson announced their decisions less than a week after Mississippi State hired coach Mike Leach away from Washington State.
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — Bobby Petrino has been hired as the new football coach at Missouri State. The school says Petrino will be introduced at a news conference Thursday. He will replace Dave Steckel, who was fired last week after winning just 13 games in five seasons. Petrino has a 119-56 record in 14 seasons at Arkansas, Western Kentucky and Louisville. He left the Arkansas job after a motorcycle accident exposed an extra-marital affair. Petrino was 36-26 in his second stint with Louisville when he was fired in 2018 in the midst of a seven-game losing streak.
AUBURN, Ala. (AP) — Former major league pitcher Tim Hudson is Auburn's new pitching coach. Hudson will be a volunteer assistant and pitching coach for the program where he once starred as a two-way player. Hudson played 17 years in the major leagues with Oakland, Atlanta and San Francisco before retiring in 2015. He went 222-133 with a 3.48 ERA in his career and was a four-time All-Star. Hudson was inducted into the Braves Hall of Fame and the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in 2018.
