NFL-GIANTS-JUDGE

Giants said to be working on deal with Judge to be head coach

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — A person familiar with the negotiations tells The Associated Press the New York Giants and Patriots assistant Joe Judge are working on a deal for him to become the team's next head coach.

Judge has won three Super Bowls with New England in eight years as an assistant on Bill Belichick's staff. He was the fifth candidate the Giants have interviewed since firing Pat Shurmur last week.

Judge would take over a team that went 4-12 and 5-11 in Shurmur's two seasons and has been to the playoffs just once since winning the Super Bowl after the 2011 season.

In other NFL coaching moves:

—The Carolina Panthers have announced that Baylor's Matt Rhule has agreed to become their next head coach. Panthers owner David Tepper visited Rhule at his home in Waco, Texas, and decided he wanted him to succeed Ron Rivera, who was fired with four games remaining in the season. The 44-year-old Rhule will inherit a Panthers team that hasn't won a playoff game since 2015. Rhule helped turn around programs at Temple and Baylor.

— The Dallas Cowboys will introduce Mike McCarthy as the ninth coach in franchise history on Wednesday. It will be the second coaching stop for the 56-year-old McCarthy. He won a Super Bowl and went to the playoffs nine times in 12-plus seasons with Green Bay. The Packers won the Super Bowl at the home of the Cowboys nine years ago. McCarthy replaces Jason Garrett, whose team missed the playoffs in the final year of his contract.

— The Detroit Lions have promoted assistant coaches Hank Fraley and Billy Yates to lead their offensive line. Fraley had been Detroit's assistant offensive line coach the previous two seasons. Yates was on Matt Patricia's coaching staff the last two years. Patricia fired six members of his staff shortly after he finished his second season with three wins.

Baylor tests new high ranking

UNDATED (AP) — After earning its highest ranking in three years -- a number-four spot in the Associated Press college basketball poll -- Baylor tonight plays the first of two road games against ranked opponents. The Bears are visiting number-22 Texas Tech, which is coming off a road win over Oklahoma State. Baylor then gets four days to prepare for a game in one of college basketball’s toughest road venues, the Allen Fieldhouse at Kansas.

In other action involving top 25 teams:

—There’s a matchup of ranked teams tonight in College Park, Maryland, as the Terps host Ohio State. The Buckeyes are ranked just above Maryland at number 11. Ohio State had climbed to the second spot a few weeks ago, but dropped down in the rankings after losing three of five. Maryland fell from number 3 after losing consecutive games, but bounced back with two wins last week.

—Louisville, ranked number 13, takes on Miami, while number-14 Kentucky is at Georgia. Creighton hosts number-16 Villanova. The 18th-ranked Virginia Cavaliers are at Boston College, and number-20 Penn State is at Rutgers.

NHL-PREDATORS-HYNES

Predators hire John Hynes as new coach

UNDATED (AP) — Nashville general manager David Poile has made a rare mid-season coaching change after being fed up with the Predators underachieving.

Poile fired Peter Laviolette after returning from a pair of weekend games in California, and he has hired John Hynes as the franchise's third head coach.

Poile says the Predators are better than they have performed this season. He says some players are playing way below their level of potential or the franchise's expectations.

The Predators have won the Central Division each of the past two seasons and lost in the 2017 Stanley Cup Final.

In other NHL news:

— In other NHL news: California billionaire businessman Ronald Burkle’s adult son Andrew has been found dead at his home. The Burkle family says in a statement that Andrew Burkle died Monday in Beverly Hills. NBA-PISTONS-GRIFFIN SURGERY

Griffin out indefinitely after knee surgery

UNDATED (AP) — Detroit Pistons forward Blake Griffin is out indefinitely after having surgery on his left knee.

The Pistons announced Tuesday that Griffin will have an extended rehabilitation period with no timetable for his return.

The 30-year-old Griffin was an NBA All-Star last season for the sixth time. He has played in just 18 games this season and is averaging a career-low 15.5 points and a career-low 4.7 rebounds per game.

In other NBA news:

— Zion Williamson has now participated in full-court and five-on-five drills as the NBA's top overall draft choice moves closer to making his NBA debut. Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry said Tuesday there is still no firm date on when the 6-foot-6, 285-pound Williamson will play in his first regular season game. But Gentry says Williamson generally looks “fine.”

— The Miami Heat will celebrate Dwyane Wade’s career with a three-day tribute next month. Plans call for the retirement of his No. 3 jersey and a viewing of the documentary covering his on- and off-court career. Wade played 16 seasons in the NBA. Most of them were with Miami. He helped the Heat win NBA titles in 2006, 2012 and 2013 and is the leading scorer in team history.

— Forward Marquese Chriss has been waived by the Warriors, providing room for Golden State to sign Damion Lee for the remainder of the season. Lee was in his final days of a two-way contract that allowed him to split time with the Santa Cruz Warriors of the G League.

MLB-RED SOX-STEALING

Baseball to investigation allegations against Red Sox

UNDATED (AP) — Major League Baseball says it will investigate allegations the Boston Red Sox illegally used their video replay room to steal signs between opposing pitchers and catchers during their 2018 World Series championship season.

The claims were made Tuesday in a report by The Athletic. The website cited three anonymous sources it said were with the Red Sox during the 2018 season who said some players visited the replay room during regular-season games to get information on sign sequences.

The Red Sox say they will cooperate with MLB's investigation into the allegations.

In other MLB news:

— The Chicago White Sox have agreed to a $6 million, one-year contract with free-agent reliever Steve Cishek (SEE'-shehk), pending a physical. The 33-year-old Cishek spent the previous two seasons with the crosstown Cubs. The sidearming right-hander went 4-6 with a 2.95 ERA and seven saves in 70 appearances last season.

— The Baltimore Orioles have signed veteran infielder José Iglesias to a one-year, $3 million contract on Tuesday. The deal comes with a $3 million club option for 2021. After trading shortstop Jonathan Villar in December, Elias is virtually guaranteed a starting job.

BACHELOR CONTESTANTS-DRAFKINGS

DraftKings reviewing win by former ‘Bachelor’ contestant

BOSTON (AP) — Sports gambling giant DraftKings is reviewing a former "Bachelor” contestant's $1 million win in an online fantasy football contest after she and her husband are accused of cheating.

Jade Roper-Tolbert beat more than 100,000 entries to take the top prize in DraftKings' "Millionaire Maker" contest this past weekend. But some complained she'd colluded with her husband, Tanner Tolbert, who is a prolific fantasy sports player and fellow “Bachelor” alum.

The couple submitted 300 entries into the contest, nearly all of them listing a unique lineup of players from the NFL’s four wild-card games.
