UNDATED (AP) — No. 5 Auburn and No. 7 San Diego State face tough tests this week while trying to remain Division I's only undefeated teams. The Tigers face Vanderbilt and high-scoring Aaron Nesmith before taking on Georgia and star freshman Anthony Edwards. The Aztecs face what may be the toughest road trip in the Mountain West with games against Wyoming and Boise State. It's also a big week in the Big 12 with three games between ranked opponents.
UNDATED (AP) — About two-thirds of Americans support college athletes being permitted to earn money for endorsements. That's according to a new poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. Support for the NCAA allowing college athletes to cash in on their names, images and likenesses is especially high among young adults, as well as black Americans and Hispanics. NCAA officials and college sports leaders are now trying to sort out how to make it work.
STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — Oscar Tshiebwe scored 12 points and Derek Culver had nine points and 12 rebounds to help lead No. 17 West Virginia to a 55-41 victory over Oklahoma State. Miles McBride also had 10 points for West Virginia (12-2, 1-1 Big 12), which is now 5-1 in its last six outings. Lindy Waters had 12 points for Oklahoma State (9-5, 0-2), which is 2-5 in its last seven after starting the season 7-0.
UNDATED (AP) — Gonzaga, Duke and Kansas remain atop The Associated Press men's college basketball poll. The Bulldogs received 54 first-place votes from a 65-member media panel. The Blue Devils had nine first-place votes and the Jayhawks two. No. 4 Baylor moved into the top five for the first time in three years and undefeated Auburn rose to No. 5. Butler climbed five spots to No. 6 for the program's highest ranking ever. San Diego State is the only other undefeated Division I team. The Aztecs jumped six spots to No. 7. Michigan State, Oregon and Florida State round out the top 10.
NEW YORK (AP) — UConn cruised to two more conference wins and remained No. 1 in The Associated Press women's college basketball poll to start off 2020. The Huskies received 19 first-place votes from a 30-member media panel to stay ahead of second-ranked Oregon. The Ducks got seven first-place votes, picking up two from Oregon State, which got three. The Beavers were third and followed again by South Carolina, Stanford and Baylor. Louisville, UCLA, North Carolina State and Texas A&M round out the top 10. South Dakota, Michigan and Princeton entered the women's Top 25 while Miami, Minnesota and Texas fell out.
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina has hired Nebraska’s Jovan Dewitt as its outside linebackers coach and special teams coordinator. UNC announced Dewitt’s hire Monday after Dewitt spent the past two seasons in the same role with the Huskers. Dewitt's special teams have seven punt or kickoff returns for touchdowns in the past four seasons along with four blocked punts over the past two years. Dewitt also worked with current UNC defensive coordinator Jay Bateman at Army in 2014 and 2015. Dewitt replaces Scott Boone in the role on Mack Brown's staff.
