IN THE NEWS: STUDY ON FACIAL RECOGNITION RELEASED
UNDATED (AP) — A study by a U.S. agency finds that facial recognition technology may not work as effectively for everyone. The study — by The National Institute of Standards and Technology — finds the technology tends to perform unevenly based on a person’s race, age or gender. Such software is increasingly being used by law enforcement at airports — as well as in many businesses. Critics have complained that their spotty performance can cause problems — and want to see more kinks worked out before it is more widely used than it already is.
IN THE NEWS: SMARTPHONES USED TO SPOT LEGIT POT SELLERS
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California marijuana users can now turn to technology to find out if a pot dispensary is legit. There’s a new program that encourages licensed cannabis retailers to post QR codes in their store windows. When the code is scanned, it takes users to a website that tells whether the dispensary is on the up-and-up. Those who don’t have a phone that can read QR codes can look up retailers’ info on the state website.
ON THE WEB: RIDE-SHARING IN PHOENIX
CYBERSPACE (AP) — Phoenix is the nation’s fifth largest city. But people are about to lose a service many other smaller cities still have: the ability to grab an Uber or Lyft to the airport. The ride-sharing companies say they will soon stop taking customers to Sky Harbor International airport. At issue is a decision by the city to raise fees on ride-hailing companies. Uber and Lyft say they don’t want to be taxed more just to line the city’s coffers. In the meantime, traditional taxi service will continue to be used at the Phoenix airport.
