MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — As Minnesota clung to a five-point lead in the closing minutes, coach P.J. Fleck figured many followers of the Gophers were bracing for a Penn State touchdown and an unhappy ending. But Minnesota hung on for a 31-26 victory to stay undefeated and take another step toward its first trip to the Big Ten championship game. Fleck is seeking to establish a new era for this long-languishing program, urging fans to let go of the angst about big letdowns and losing seasons of the past.

UNDATED (AP) — AJ Dillon has been Boston College's workhorse for three years. He outdid himself against Florida State. The junior running back carried a career-high 40 times in the Eagles' loss for the most by a Football Bowl Subdivision player since Boise State's Alexander Mattison ran the same number of times against Fresno State last December. Army tied Air Force for most team rushing attempts when it ran 78 times for a national season-high 498 yards against Massachusetts.

UNDATED (AP) — LSU is an overwhelming No. 1 in The Associated Press college football poll after beating Alabama in a 1-2 matchup, and Minnesota moved into the top 10 for the first time in 57 years. After two weeks of historically close voting at the top of poll, LSU received 54 first-place votes in the AP Top 25 presented by Regions Bank. Ohio State was No. 2, Clemson was third and Alabama fell to No. 4.

NEW YORK (AP) — It didn't count in the standings, but the most shocking game of the opening week of women's basketball was No. 1 Oregon stunning the U.S. women's national team. The Americans played a four-game college tour that had them face Stanford, Oregon State, Texas A&M and the Ducks over a seven-day stretch.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Freshman D.J. Carton and Kaleb Wesson each had 13 points and No. 18 Ohio State routed UMass-Lowell 76-56. The Buckeyes (2-0) got contributions throughout the lineup in the tuneup against the Atlantic East squad ahead of Wednesday night's matchup with No. 10 Villanova.
