TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — A Democratic House freshman from New Jersey is emerging as a leading skeptic of impeaching President Donald Trump.
Congressman Jeff Van Drew's party is set to hold a preliminary vote Thursday to establish procedures for the impeachment inquiry. He may be among the few Democrats who votes against it.
Survey shows most Democrats are behind an inquiry, but Van Drew comes from a right-leaning district and has nearly two decades of experience as a conservative Democratic lawmaker in state government.
He has called for letting voters decide Trump's fate in next year's election.
Those who know Van Drew well say his stance on impeachment stems from a close read of the voters in his district, which the GOP controlled for more than two decades before his victory in 2018.
