Josh Furlong's AP Top 25 ballot: Auburn the early winner in status quo opening weekend

SALT LAKE CITY — The first week of college football is in the books and there are finally games for us to evaluate.

The majority of the consensus Associated Press Top 25 teams won their games against inferior opponents, so the first week of action provided little opportunity to start positioning teams in the Top 25. But any games are still better than what we had in the preseason.

Despite the relative chalk nature of Week 1, I still made some changes to my ballot for this week.

My methodology: Each week I compare my ballot with that of the consensus Top 25 poll, and factor in game results, team and opponent efficiencies, and metrics such as SP+ to form my weekly ballot.

Rising: Auburn, Boise State, Penn State, Syracuse, Utah, Washington, Washington State

The big winner of my ballot this week is Auburn, which was featured in the only ranked matchup of Week 1 play against Oregon. The Tigers started the game out slow but finished with an impressive 21 unanswered points to seal a 27-21 victory at AT&T Stadium. Freshman quarterback Bo Nix showed he’s not afraid of the spotlight as he led his team to victory.

Falling: Mississippi State, Missouri, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Oregon, TCU, Texas A&M

Missouri? That’s both a question and a statement. Fortunately for the Tigers, their 37-31 road loss to Wyoming is not the worst loss in the first week of play (hello Tennessee!). Missouri is not eligible for postseason play due to NCAA sanctions, but it seems like they’re also looking to do it the old fashioned way and fail to reach the .500 mark this season (#TooSoon?).

Added: Boise State, Syracuse, Washington State

Boise State continued a strong opening week for the Mountain West Conference against Power Five programs as they won in dramatic come-from-behind fashion against Florida State. Unfortunately for the Seminoles, Jameis Winston is not walking through that door.

Dropped: Mississippi State, Missouri, TCU

I have nothing against Mississippi State or TCU (Mizzou, you know what you did), but the previously mentioned teams added to my ballot were more impressive and deserving of a Top 25 ranking.

Teams in consideration: Cincinnati, Memphis, Mississippi State, Northwestern, Oklahoma State, TCU, Virginia, Wyoming
