WEST VALLEY CITY — Police shot and killed a man in the DUI processing center in the basement of West Valley City Hall Friday night, police said.
The man was taken into custody and was in City Hall, 3600 S. Constitution Blvd., when an altercation occurred between him and officers, according to West Valley police spokeswoman Roxeanne Vainuku.
Sometime during the altercation, one police officer shot and killed the man. Police didn’t immediately have details on what exactly caused the altercation or if the man had a weapon. It's not clear if he was detained or handcuffed when the altercation occurred.
Vainuku said multiple officers were present during the altercation but only one fired a weapon.
Body camera footage of the incident does exist, Vainuku said, and Salt Lake City police are investigating the incident. She was not sure if there was security camera footage from the area in the building.
As is protocol, the officer who shot the man has been placed on administrative leave pending the investigation’s outcome. The officer is a veteran of the West Valley City Police Department, Vainuku said. The officer was not identified.
Police originally said the critical incident occurred in West Valley City Police Department’s building but later clarified it occurred in the DUI processing area inside City Hall.
The processing area is very small, with just two chairs — one for the DUI suspect and one for the investigating officer, according to Vainuku. There also is an intoxilyzer machine used for alcohol testing, she said.
She did not know if the man was searched before he entered the DUI processing area. She also did not know where the man was originally stopped for investigation of the DUI.
No one else was injured in the incident, Vainuku said. Police will provide more details on the incident Saturday, she added.
