WIMBLEDON, England (AP) — Simona Halep (HAL'-ehp) has reached her first Wimbledon final. The former No. 1 advanced to Saturday's championship match at the All England Club by beating Elina Svitolina 6-1, 6-3. The seventh-seeded Romanian will face either seven-time Wimbledon champion Serena Williams or Barbora Strycova (STREET’-soh-vah) in the final.
WIMBLEDON, England (AP) — Rafael Nadal's run to the Wimbledon semifinals has allowed him to qualify for the ATP Finals for a record 15th consecutive year. Nadal is the first man to clinch a spot in the season-ending tournament. Novak Djokovic (NOH'-vak JOH'-kuh-vich) can also put himself in the field if he repeats as Wimbledon champion. Nadal carries a 17-match winning streak into his semifinal tomorrow against Roger Federer, while Djokovic faces Roberto Bautista Agut (ah-GOOT’).
GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. (AP) _ Former New York Yankees pitcher and controversial baseball author Jim Bouton has died at age 80. Bouton was 21-8 with six shutouts in 1963, his second season in the majors. He went 18-13 with four more shutouts in 1964 before winning a pair of World Series games against the Cardinals that fall. But his playing career was forever eclipsed by his 1970 book “Ball Four,” the first tell-all baseball memoir that angered many in the game’s establishment.
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Penguins center Matt Cullen has retired after a 21-season career that included three Stanley Cup titles. Cullen won a Cup with Carolina in 2006 and then consecutive titles with Pittsburgh in 2016 and 2017. He had 266 goals, 465 assists and 502 penalty minutes over more than 1,500 games with Anaheim, Florida, Carolina, the New York Rangers, Ottawa, Minnesota, Nashville and Pittsburgh. He also had 19 goals and 39 assists in 132 career playoff games.
MOSCOW (AP) _ Former world cruiserweight boxing champion Denis Lebedev has retired aged 39 after a lengthy and colorful career. Lebedev won the interim WBA cruiserweight title in 2011 against James Toney, and successfully defended it eight times to 2017. Known for entering the ring in Russian paratrooper uniform, Lebedev finishes with a 32-2 win-loss record, 23 by knockout.
