SALT LAKE CITY — Utah Jazz assistant coach Fotis Katsikaris is leaving to take the head coaching job at Gran Canaria, the Spanish club announced Wednesday.

Katsikaris, the first-ever native Greek NBA assistant, was with the Jazz for just one season.

"Fotis Katsikaris was a tremendous addition to our staff this past season and we thank him for his contributions to our organization," Jazz coach Quin Snyder said in a statement. "Returning to the ACB League as a head coach, where he had a great career in the past, is an incredible opportunity. While I know what a difficult decision this was for him, we all look forward to following his success. Basketball is thriving as a global game and we will continue to grow with it as we explore opportunities to learn from international coaches."

The veteran coach came to the Jazz after serving as the head coach of Iberostar Tenerife of the ACB.

Katsikaris' departure comes on the heels of Jazz assistant Tony Lang taking a job with the Cleveland Cavaliers last week.
