NEW YORK (AP) — The Tampa Bay Rays have been given the go-ahead by Major League Baseball to look into playing a split season in Montreal. Commissioner Rob Manfred said made the announcement at the end of the owners' meetings. There is no timetable for the possible plan. An idea under consideration is for the Rays to play early in the season in Tampa Bay and later in Montreal.
WASHINGTON (AP) _ President Donald Trump says he'll consider inviting the NBA champion Toronto Raptors to the White House "if they'd like to do it." Asked at the White House whether he'd invite the team, Trump said it's an "interesting question" that he hadn't thought about. Trump said the Raptors played "phenomenal basketball" as they defeated the Golden State Warriors to win the team's first NBA title.
WASHINGTON (AP) _ The Washington Nationals are the latest Major League Baseball team to extend protective netting after recent injuries increased the focus on fan safety at ballparks. Nationals managing principal owner Mark Lerner announced in a letter to fans it will happen during the All-Star break. Lerner says the club will extend it to just short of the foul poles in the left and right field corners.
NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — A suspect in the shooting of former baseball star David Ortiz has been charged with drug and firearm possession in New Jersey. The U.S. attorney's office in Newark announced the indictment Thursday for Rolfi Ferreira-Cruz. The 25-year-old also faces state charges in New Jersey in connection with two armed robberies in 2017. Ortiz was shot in the back at a bar in the Dominican Republic on June 9.
NEW YORK (AP) —The NFL competition committee has decided against making any changes to the new rule for reviewing pass interference. That means the rule stands as approved by NFL owners in March. During the rule's one-year trial this season, coaches still can challenge until the two-minute warning of each half or overtime when a replay official will be responsible for reviews.
