OGDEN, Utah (AP) — The Utah Supreme Court has revived a lawsuit filed by a man who spent 17 days in jail in Box Elder County without being brought before a judge. The Standard-Examiner reports that the Supreme Court's ruling Monday said the state District Court incorrectly applied a standard for determining when a county employee is liable for damages for violating constitutional protections.

MAGNA, Utah (AP) — A gathering at the Great Salt Lake in hopes of making it into the record books fell way short. Utah park officials invited people to a beach on the lake's south end Saturday in an attempt to set the world record for the largest number of people floating together, unassisted, in a line at one time. According to the Guinness World Records website, Argentina holds the current record with 1,941 people. Only about 300 people showed up at Utah's attempt.

PROVO, Utah (AP) — Provo police say witness accounts indicate a man was fatally shot while advancing toward a passer-by and a woman who allegedly had been hit, bitten and stomped. Police on Friday released additional information about the circumstances surrounding the shooting Monday night of 26-year-old Jeremy Sorensen by the passer-by.

MAPLETON, Utah (AP) — A woman in Utah County is celebrating 15 years rehabilitating wildlife in her backyard. The Daily Herald reports Patti Richards rescues more than 100 birds each year including talking crows and baby owls. The majority of the birds are released back into their natural habitat once they've recovered from their injury or illness. The rescue is also home to several education birds who work at schools, memorials and fundraisers. Richards said the rescue has received a lot of community support.
