Asked if the U.S. was going to war with Iran, the president replied, "I hope not" _ a day after he repeated a desire for dialogue with the Islamic Republic, tweeting, "I'm sure that Iran will want to talk soon." His tone contrasts with a series of moves by the U.S. and Iran that have sharply escalated tensions in the Middle East.
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Saudi Arabia has accused Tehran of being behind a drone strike that shutdown a key oil pipeline in the kingdom, and a newspaper close to the palace called for Washington to carry out "surgical" strikes against Iran, raising the specter of escalating tensions as the U.S. boosts its military presence in the Persian Gulf. Tensions have flared recently after the U.S. sent warships and bombers to the region to counter an alleged but unspecified threat from Iran.
WASHINGTON (AP) — A federal judge has ordered portions of special counsel Robert Mueller's report to be unredacted and made public in the criminal case against former national security adviser Michael Flynn. U.S. District Judge Emmet Sullivan issued the limited order Thursday. Portions of the report relating to Flynn are redacted and would be made public under the order. It is the first time a federal judge has ordered the Justice Department to make public portions of the report the agency had kept secret.
ATMORE, Ala. (AP) — Alabama prison officials say 41-year-old inmate Michael Brandon Samra was pronounced dead at 7:33 p.m. following a lethal injection for his role in a 1997 quadruple killing. Samra made a profession of Christian faith in his last statement, and the families of the victims later released a statement saying "justice was carried out."
