UNDATED (AP) — The Carolina Hurricanes are heading to the NHL's Eastern Conference final after sweeping the New York Islanders. Carolina has won six straight games and eight of nine since dropping the first two of its first-round series with Washington. A little over five months ago, the Hurricanes were tied for last in the division and one point out of the Eastern Conference basement. They'll take on the winner of the Boston-Columbus series, which is tied 2-2 heading into Game 5 tonight.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The Portland Trail Blazers have taken a 2-1 lead in their semifinal series with Denver after beating the Nuggets 140-137 in four overtimes. Rodney Hood hit the key 3-pointer with 18.6 seconds left. It was just the second quadruple-overtime playoff game in NBA history, joining a 1953 game between the Boston Celtics and the Syracuse Nationals.
HOUSTON (AP) — The Houston Rockets hope to avoid falling into a 0-3 hole when they host Golden State tonight in Game 3. No team has ever come back after losing the first three games to win a playoff series. Houston is hoping James Harden will be back to full strength after both of his eyes were injured in the first quarter of Game 2 while fighting for a rebound with Golden State's Draymond Green.
NEW YORK (AP) — Third baseman Miguel Andújar is set to come off the injured list for the Yankees today against Minnesota. Second baseman DJ LeMahieu (leh-MAY'-hyoo) may join him in the lineup. The Yankees are also hoping for good news when left-hander James Paxton gets an MRI. He left last night's game with soreness in his left knee.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Game Winner is the 9-2 favorite for today's 145th running of the Kentucky Derby, after Omaha Beach was scratched because of a breathing problem. Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert has three shots at winning his sixth Derby today. He trained Game Winner, Roadster and Improbable.
