LOS ANGELES (AP) — Magic Johnson abruptly quit as the Los Angeles Lakers' president of basketball operations last night, citing a desire to get back to the simpler life he enjoyed before taking over the franchise just more than two years ago. Johnson didn't tell owner Jeanie Buss or general manager Rob Pelinka before he stepped in front of reporters about 90 minutes before the final game of the Lakers' sixth consecutive losing season.

DALLAS (AP) — Dallas Mavericks star Dirk Nowitzki says he's retiring from the NBA. The 40-year-old kept his plans secret until the end of his final home game. After speeches from Larry Bird and others he idolized growing up in Germany, Nowitzki told the crowd, "this is my last home game." Nowitzki played a record 21 seasons with the same franchise, scoring 30 points in his final home game in a 120-109 victory over the Phoenix Suns on Tuesday night.

ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) — The Detroit Lions have signed quarterback Tom Savage. Detroit made the move Tuesday, giving the team another backup option behind Matthew Stafford. The Lions also have quarterbacks Matt Cassel and Connor Cook on the roster. Savage was on rosters in Cincinnati and San Francisco last season after starting nine games and playing in four games as a backup from 2014-17 in Houston. He has completed 181 of 315 passes for 2,000 yards with five touchdowns and seven interceptions in his career.

NEW YORK (AP) — For the first time in a long time there is no real consensus No. 1 pick in the WNBA draft. The Las Vegas Aces have the top choice in tonight's draft and could take any of Asia Durr, Jackie Young and Teaira McCowan or they could go in a completely different direction and trade the pick. Las Vegas also had the No. 1 pick the last two years. The team's final season in San Antonio resulted in their drafting Kelsey Plum first. The Aces' inaugural year they took rookie of the year A'ja Wilson.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A citation has been issued against a Missouri man accused of flashing a laser at New England quarterback Tom Brady during the Patriots' AFC championship game victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. Prosecutors say that 64-year-old Dwyan Morgan, of Lee's Summit, faces a single count of disturbing the peace, a municipal violation. Television stations posted footage after the game that showed a green light flashing on Brady late in the Patriots' 37-31 overtime victory on Jan. 20. Prosecutors say Brady was unaware of the laser.
