HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — An NCAA Tournament upset or at-large bid is like winning the lottery for the smaller conferences in college basketball. They often use it to fund conference-wide initiatives to improve team play, giving their programs a better chance to be the next Cinderella team of March Madness. But an exclusive AP analysis of more than $3 billion paid out over more than 20 years shows those windfalls are becoming harder to come by as power conferences hoard tournament revenue.
UNDATED (AP) — The NCAA's revenue distribution system puts an exact price tag on bids and wins in the NCAA Tournament leading up to the Final Four. And once conferences are paid, they distribute money back to their member schools. For the smaller conferences, a Cinderella run is a chance to reap a rare windfall.
ATLANTA (AP) — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation's medical examiner plans further tests to determine the cause of Georgia Tech defensive lineman Brandon Adams' death. The 21-year-old Adams died Saturday. An autopsy was performed Monday.
NEW YORK (AP) — The Sweet 16 is set and Missouri State is crashing the party for the first time in 18 years. The 11th-seeded Lady Bears, who last got this far in 2001 when the team made its historic Final Four run, are the only double-digit seed to reach the regional semifinals. The Pac-12 continued to establish its dominance with five teams reaching the Sweet 16 for the second time in three years.
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Kiara Leslie had 26 points and 10 rebounds, and North Carolina State pulled away to beat Kentucky 72-57 in the second round of the women's NCAA Tournament. The third-seeded Wolfpack dominated the glass while earning their second straight trip to the Sweet 16.
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Arike Ogunbowale scored 23 points and two teammates had double-doubles as top-seed Notre Dame ran away from No. 9-seed Michigan State in the first half of a 91-63 victory in the NCAA Chicago Regional. Jackie Young gave coach Muffet McGraw and the Purcell Pavilion crowd a scare when she fell hard to the floor just seconds before the end of the third quarter.
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — Madison Guebert scored 18 of her 20 points on 3-pointers, including two critical 3s in the fourth quarter, to lead No. 6 seed South Dakota State to a 75-64 win over third-seeded Syracuse on Monday night in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The victory sends the Jackrabbits (28-6) to the Sweet 16 for the first time in program history.
UNDATED (AP) — The North Carolina State baseball team has won 23 of 24 games to start the season and is coming off its first sweep of Miami. The Wolfpack have won 10 one-run games and they've come from behind to win 12. That includes seven games when they trailed after the sixth inning. Freshman center fielder Tyler McDonough is batting .392 to lead the offense. Junior college transfer Jason Parker anchors the pitching staff.
