CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) — Quarterback Tate Martell is eligible to play for the Miami Hurricanes this season and will not have to sit out the customary transfer year. In a decision announced Tuesday, the NCAA approved a waiver for the former Ohio State quarterback. Miami announced the verdict about three hours after the Hurricanes' first spring practice and first under new head coach Manny Diaz.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina earned a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament thanks largely to the scoring punch from Cameron Johnson, Coby White and Luke Maye. The three have all proven capable of carrying the Tar Heels on any given night, giving UNC the versatility to pivot to the hot hand to beat a defensive gameplan. The Tar Heels sit atop the Midwest Region bracket and open play Friday against Iona in Columbus, Ohio.

UNDATED (AP) — Notre Dame star Arike Ogunbowale is ready to lead the Fighting Irish on another NCAA Tournament run. She hit game-winning shots in the final seconds of both the semifinals and the national championship last year while becoming one of the biggest celebrities in women's basketball. She jokes that she'd prefer the Irish build a big lead and not need any buzzer-beaters this year. Notre Dame begins tournament play Saturday against Bethune-Cookman as a No. 1 seed.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minnesota has had no bigger fan than coach Richard Pitino's father, with Rick Pitino taking plenty of opportunities to support his son, advise the players and just plain root for the Gophers. That was before they were paired against Louisville in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Rick Pitino has a professional team in Greece to coach, so he won't be at the game. For Richard Pitino, this isn't about revenge on the school that fired his dad. It's about progress for his program.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The NCAA says it won't move future tournament games away from states or venues where gambling is legal. Although the organization remains opposed to gambling on its events, NCAA officials say they can't do anything to stop the spread of legal sports betting. This year's NCAA men's and women's basketball tournaments will be the first since the Supreme Court allowed sports betting in any state that wants it.

CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) — Marcquise Reed had 24 points as Clemson defeated Wright State 75-69 in the first round of the NIT. Elijah Thomas had 17 points and three blocks for Clemson (20-13).
