SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Nicolas Hernandez scored in the 48th minute to lift the Colorado Rapids to a 1-0 victory over Real Salt Lake on Saturday night.
The goal, which was set up by defender Dan Gargan from the 25-yard-line, was the seventh of the season for Hernandez.
The win moved the Rapids into third place in the Western Conference, one point ahead of CD Chivas USA. Real Salt Lake is now three points behind Colorado.
Officials issued a league-record seven yellow cards.
Kyle Beckerman, Colin Clark, Hunter Freeman, Gargan and Thiago Martins received yellow cards for the Rapids. Scott Garlick and Eddie Pope each received one for Real Salt Lake.
Garlick's yellow card came shortly after the games only goal. He argued that teammate Mehdi Ballouchy was tripped before the shot. The teams combined for 18 fouls.
The Rapids finished the game with 15 shots, while Real Salt Lake had nine.
