SALT LAKE CITY — Washington Post reporting legend Bob Woodward and Elder D. Todd Christofferson will discuss integrity and trust in politics on Monday, Jan. 14 in an event hosted by the Deseret News.

They will highlight their takeaways from their Watergate experiences and how those lessons have shaped their lives and still apply today.

The Watergate Scandal occurred in June 1972, when a break-in at the headquarters for the Democratic National Committee brought on an extensive investigation into multiple abuses of power by the Nixon Administration during his time as president, according to History.com. The scandal changed the state of politics in the United States forever, bringing Americans to question politicians and think critically about their presidents.

Bob Woodward and his Washington Post colleague Carl Bernstein were awarded a Pulitzer Prize in 1973 for breaking the Watergate story. Woodward also won a Pulitzer for his coverage of the 9/11 events. He has authored 19 nonfiction best-sellers and is currently an associate editor at The Washington Post.

He will be joined by Elder D. Todd Christofferson, a former law clerk for U.S. District Court Judge Sirica. He was one of the first to hear the Nixon White House tapes. His distinguished career in law continued until 1993 when he left his profession to become a general authority for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He currently is serving as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.

To provide context and back up their points, Michael Dimock, president of the Pew Research Center, will present results from recent polls on trust in individuals, elected officials and institutions. Pew Research Center is a nonpartisan fact tank that seeks to keep the public informed about issues, attitudes and trends.
