HOUSTON (AP) — The Latest on the death of former President George H.W. Bush (all times local):
3:40 p.m.
Former President George H.W. Bush will be laid to rest Thursday on the grounds of his presidential library at Texas A&M University.
The school announced Saturday Bush will be buried at the family plot next to his wife Barbara, who died in April, and their 3-year-old daughter Robin, who died in 1953.
Texas A&M University President Michael Young says no classes will be held on the day of Bush's burial.
Bush didn't attend Texas A&M but in 1991 chose the campus as the library's site. The campus is located about 90 miles northwest of Houston, where Bush lived.
Before his burial, Bush will lie in state in the Capitol Rotunda in Washington, D.C., from Monday evening through Wednesday morning.
A funeral service is also planned for Washington's National Cathedral.

President Donald Trump says he'll send Air Force One to Texas to transport the casket of former president George H.W. Bush to Washington.
Trump says it's a "special tribute" to Bush, who died Friday at age 94. Sending the U.S. military aircraft to transport a former president's remains is also standard practice.
Trump says he'll send the plane to Houston after he returns to Washington early Sunday after attending a world leader summit in Argentina.
Bush is scheduled to lie in state in the Capitol Rotunda from Monday through Wednesday, followed by a funeral service at Washington National Cathedral.
The U.S. military aircraft is only called Air Force One when the president is on board, so the aircraft transporting Bush's remains will be designated a Special Air Mission flight.

Dan Quayle is calling former President George H.W. Bush "one of the best equipped, most knowledgeable and most substantive men" to ever hold the office.
Quayle was Bush's vice president. Bush died Friday at age 94.
In a commentary published by the Wall Street Journal, Quayle says the "theatrics of politics" ran against Bush's nature and that the 41st president "always did what he thought right."
Quayle says the best advice he received from Bush in his duties as vice president was, "Be prepared and be loyal." Bush himself had ascended to the presidency after serving two terms as President Ronald Reagan's vice president.
Quayle says a vice president can face resentment if it's believed he's overstepping his responsibilities, but Bush helped him avoid internal discord by giving him clearly defined assignments

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has expressed condolences over the death of former U.S. President George H. W. Bush.
The official Palestinian news agency reported Saturday that Abbas sent a note to Bush family. Bush died Friday night at age 94.
While president, Bush co-hosted an international peace conference in Madrid in 1991. The conference helped launch an Israeli-Palestinian peace process that ultimately ran aground.
Relations between the Palestinian leadership and the U.S. reached lowest point under the Trump administration. The Palestinians accuse President Donald Trump of preparing to roll out a peace plan that favors Israel.
Trump recognized contested Jerusalem as Israel's capital and halted most of U.S. aid to the Palestinians.

Queen Elizabeth II has expressed sadness at the death of Britain's "great friend and ally" George H.W. Bush.
The British monarch said the former president was "a patriot, serving his country with honor and distinction in office and during the Second World War."
The queen and her husband, Prince Philip, "remember our days in Texas in 1991 with great fondness." The royal couple visited the state during an official trip to the U.S. during Bush's presidency.
At the Group of 20 summit in Argentina, French President Emmanuel Macron said he shared his personal condolences, and that of the "French nation," with President Donald Trump on Saturday.

President Donald Trump is ordering federal offices to be closed Wednesday to honor former President George H.W. Bush.
Trump signed an executive order Saturday, a day after Bush's death, directing federal agencies and departments to close "as a mark of respect for George Herbert Walker Bush, the forty-first President of the United States."
Trump had already proclaimed Wednesday a national day of mourning.
The White House announced Bush will be honored with a state funeral and said President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump will attend a service at Washington's National Cathedral.
Congressional leaders have said Bush will lie in state in Capitol Rotunda from Monday evening through Wednesday morning.

The 41st president died late Friday, less than a year after the passing of his wife of 73 years, former first lady Barbara Bush.
The leaders of Congress from both parties say an arrival ceremony will be held for the former president on Monday at 5 p.m. EST. The public is invited to pay respects beginning Monday at 7:30 p.m. EST through Wednesday at 7 a.m.
House Speaker Paul Ryan, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer and House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi say the Bush family will announce additional details about funeral arrangements beyond the Capitol ceremony.
A funeral service is planned for Washington's National Cathedral. The White House has said Trump and first lady Melania Trump will attend.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Michael Dukakis, who lost to George H.W. Bush in the 1988 presidential election, says his former political foe's greatest legacy was his efforts to help end the Cold War.
Dukakis told The Associated Press in a telephone interview that the two men strongly disagreed on domestic policy. But he credits Bush with successfully negotiating with Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev. Bush died Friday night at age 94.
Dukakis also praised Bush for working with other countries and the United Nations in the first Gulf War, calling him wise and thoughtful in international affairs.
Dukakis blames himself for his election loss, saying he failed to respond aggressively to a Bush campaign ad featuring a convicted killer named Willie Horton who raped a woman and stabbed her partner while out of prison on a Massachusetts furlough program.

Congressional leaders on Capitol Hill are mourning the passing of former President George H.W. Bush.

Israel's prime minister is praising former President George H.W. Bush's "commitment to Israel's security" and "important contribution to the liberation of Soviet Jewry."
In a letter of condolences Saturday, Benjamin Netanyahu wrote that Israel "will always remember his efforts to achieve peace in the Middle East." Bush died Friday night in Houston at age 94.
During his presidency, Bush got a reluctant Yitzhak Shamir, Israel's prime minister at the time, to send a delegation to an international Mideast peace conference in Madrid. That helped launch Israeli-Palestinian peace efforts that ultimately ran aground.
Bush also tussled with Shamir over settlement building, linking it at one point to millions of dollars in loan guarantees Israel sought from Washington to resettle Soviet Jews in Israel.

President Donald Trump says he expressed his "best wishes" to the Bush family Saturday after the death of former President George H.W. Bush.
Trump says he spoke with former President George W. Bush and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush to express his sympathies. He praised the elder Bush, who died Friday, as "a high-quality man who truly loved his family."
He added that Bush's death "really puts a damper" on his participation at the international Group of 20 summit in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Earlier Saturday, Trump canceled a planned press conference at the summit out of respect for the Bush family. Trump has publicly sparred with the political dynasty, clashing on style and substance.
Trump was meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who praised the late Bush as one of the fathers of German reunification.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has told reporters at the Group of 20 summit in Argentina that she "probably couldn't be standing here" without the work of former U.S. President George H.W. Bush.
Bush supported Germany's quick reunification less than a year after the Berlin Wall fell in 1989. Bush died Friday night at his home in Houston. He was 94.
Merkel, who grew up behind the Iron Curtain in communist East Germany, on Saturday voiced "gratitude that George Bush recognized and understood our longing for the unity of Germany."
Merkel says then-Chancellor Helmut Kohl, her one-time mentor, "was able to rely on this friend of the Germans in the White House."

People are leaving flowers and stopping to take photos at the iron gates that lead to the street where George H.W. Bush's home is located in Houston.
The gates are closed as the public does not have access to the street in front of Bush's home.
Bush died at the home Friday night. He was 94.
Sixty-six-year-old Shirley Matthews said she stopped by the gates to pay her to respects and to take photos and video for her mom, who greatly admired Bush. Matthews lives a couple of miles away. She says Bush and his late wife, Barbara Bush, "had good character."
People are also leaving flowers at a downtown Houston park with a bronze sculpture of Bush.
President Donald Trump is directing that American flags be flown at half-staff for 30 days to honor Bush's memory. He is also designating Wednesday as a national day of mourning.

In a proclamation signed Saturday hours after Bush died, Trump is also designating Wednesday as a national day of mourning. Trump encourages Americans to gather in places of worship "to pay homage" to Bush's memory.
He adds: "I invite the people of the world who share our grief to join us in this solemn observance."
Trump hails Bush as "one of America's greatest points of light," a reference to one of the former leader's signature phrases about American civic culture.
At a campaign rally in Montana on July 5, 2018, Trump had mocked the phrase, contrasting it to his own campaign slogan, "Thousand points of light, I never quite got that one."

Vice President Mike Pence and his wife, Karen, are joining in the tributes pouring in for the late president, George H.W. Bush.
They say Bush served his country with "modesty, integrity, and patriotism" and made the world "more peaceful, prosperous and secure."
Bush died Friday night at his home in Houston. Bush was praised after Gulf War in 1991 but lost his second bid for the White House amid a weak economy.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel says former U.S. President George H.W. Bush was "a true friend" of her country, whose reunification 28 years ago he supported.
Merkel wrote to President Donald Trump Saturday that America has lost "a great patriot and statesman." Merkel, who grew up in communist East Germany, highlighted Bush's role in helping bring about German reunification in 1990, less than a year after the Berlin Wall fell.
Merkel said, "The German people had in him a true friend who recognized the significance of this historic hour and gave us his trust and support."
She added that "the courageous and peaceful revolution by people east of the Iron Curtain met with the courage and skill and of a statesman who, together with others, led Europe and the trans-Atlantic partnership through this upheaval and ushered in a new era."

That's according to White House press secretary Sarah Sanders, who says President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump will attend. She adds Trump is scheduled to speak Saturday with Bush's son former President George W. Bush to "offer his condolences on behalf of himself, the first lady, and the entire country."
Trump has a tense relationship with the Bush family, stemming from criticism they leveled at his campaign rhetoric and leadership style.
Sanders says Trump and his wife were informed late Friday of the elder Bush's death while in Argentina attending the Group of 20 summit.
Trump is also set to designate Wednesday as a national day of mourning.

EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker says Europe will never forget the role that former U.S. President George H.W. Bush played "in making Europe a safer and more united place following the fall of the Berlin Wall and the Iron Curtain."
In a statement issued Saturday after news that Bush had died at 94, Juncker says, "President Bush's calmness, leadership and close personal relationships with Helmut Kohl and Mikhail Gorbachev were decisive in restoring peace and freedom back to so many people across our Continent. We Europeans will forever remember this."
Juncker praised Bush for always serving his country "with honor, bravery and dignity" and noted he was a family man with a deep devotion to his wife, children, grandchildren and the people around him.
The E.U. official says, "I personally have lost a friend" and offers his condolences to the Bush family and the American people.

For some Iraqis, the death of George H. W. Bush has brought back bitter memories of the 1991 Persian Gulf War and the harsh U.N. economic sanctions that followed.
Then, the U.S. led a coalition to drive Saddam Hussein's army from neighboring Kuwait in an operation, dubbed "Operation Desert Storm," when missile attacks and airstrikes hit almost all Iraqi cities for more than a month.
Artist Abdul Jabbar al-Niaami posted a picture on his Facebook page of Bush picture lying in a bed and wrote "To hell!." One person commented, "May Allah curse him for demolishing our country."
Some Iraqis, including bookshop owner Mohammed Zaid, blame Bush for not removing Hussein in 1991.
In 2003, Bush's son ordered an invasion of Iraq that overthrew Hussein.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe says he's "deeply saddened" by the news of George H.W. Bush's passing.
Abe praised Bush in a statement Saturday for Bush's role in ending the Cold War with the Soviet Union and taking leadership in the Gulf War.
Abe is currently in Buenos Aires for the G20 summit. He says, "Bush accomplished historic, great achievements by contributing to peace and stability of the international community."
During his four-year presidency, Bush visited Japan twice and played tennis with Emperor Akihito. Abe says that "hugely" contributed to further enhancing amicable Japan-U.S. relations.

Former President Jimmy Carter has offered condolences following George H.W. Bush's death and praised the man he says lived a life defined by service and civility.
Carter said in a statement release Saturday: "Rosalynn and I are deeply saddened by the death of former President George H.W. Bush. His administration was marked by grace, civility, and social conscience. Through his Points of Light initiative and other projects, he espoused a uniquely American volunteer spirit, fostering bipartisan support for citizen service and inspiring millions to embrace community volunteerism as a cherished responsibility.
"We again extend our heartfelt condolences to the Bush family."

Gulf Arab nations allied with the U.S. have offered their condolences over the death of President George H.W. Bush.
Bush's death at the age of 94 takes on greater importance in the region over his actions in the 1991 Gulf War that saw Iraq expelled from Kuwait.
Leaders in the United Arab Emirates on Saturday offered condolences to both President Donald Trump and former President George W. Bush for the elder Bush's death.
Dubai's ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who also is the UAE's prime minister and vice president, tweeted that Emiratis remember Bush as "a firm ally and friend."
Oman's Sultan Qaboos bin Said similarly offered condolences.

Germany's foreign minister is remembering former U.S. President George H.W. Bush as one of the architects of his country's reunification in 1990.
Heiko Maas said in a statement Saturday that "we are mourning a great statesman and a friend of Germany."
Bush was president when the Berlin Wall fell in 1989 and supported German reunification less than a year later. Maas said that "he courageously seized the opportunity to end the Cold War."
He added that "he is also an architect of German unity. He supported it from the beginning without reservations. We will never forget that."

British leaders past and present are paying tribute to U.S. President George H.W. Bush as a committed public servant who helped the United States stand tall on the world stage.
Prime Minister Theresa May says Bush was "a great statesman and a true friend of our country" whose "ethos of public service was the guiding thread of his life and an example to us all."
May said in a statement that "in navigating a peaceful end to the Cold War he made the world a safer place for generations to come."
John Major, whose 1990-1997 term as British prime minister overlapped with Bush's presidency, said the late president "saw America's obligation to the world and honored it."
Major told the BBC that "I feel privileged to have worked with him, and even more privileged that he became a lifelong friend. He was, quite simply, one of the most deep-down decent people I have ever known."

The Dalai Lama, has offered condolences after the death former President George H.W. Bush.
The Tibetan spiritual leader said: "He was in fact the first American President that I was privileged to meet. I recall being deeply touched by your father's concern for the Tibetan people and the situation in Tibet. It is truly admirable to have lived over 94 years. While nothing can replace the loss of a father, we can rejoice in the fact that his was a meaningful life, dedicated to public service. I commend your parents for encouraging their children, including you my dear friend, to devote yourselves to the service of others."

Former Soviet premier Mikhail Gorbachev has expressed his "deep condolences" to the family of former U.S President George H.W. Bush and all Americans following his death.
Gorbachev worked closely with Bush to bring an end to the Cold War in the late 1980s and 1990s, and lauded the former president for his abilities as a politician and his personal character.
"It was a time of great change," he told the Interfax news agency, "demanding great responsibility from everyone. The result was the end of the Cold War and nuclear arms race."
Gorbachev said that he and his wife, Raisa, "deeply appreciated the attention, kindness and simplicity typical of George and Barbara Bush, as well as the rest of their large, friendly family."

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has expressed her country's condolences following the death of former President George H.W. Bush.
Ardern acknowledge in a statement early Saturday "the contribution President Bush made to international affairs over decades of service to the United States of America."
She said Bush's "statesmanship played a key role in helping to end the Cold War, which bought democracy to millions of people in Europe and diminished the threat of nuclear war. George H.W. Bush was a strong supporter of the international rules-based system, the rule of law and democratic values."

Iran has noted the death of President George H.W. Bush. A scrolling news bar on state television described Bush as being "like other U.S. presidents who wished to see the collapse of the Islamic Republic."
State television on Saturday morning announced Bush's death, citing international reports.
Iran remained suspicious of Bush despite his pledge of "good will begets good will." Iran leaned on Lebanon's Shiite militants to help win the release American hostages like Terry Anderson of The Associated Press, but relations went no further.
One of Bush's last acts as president was pardoning former Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger and others for their role in the Iran-Contra scandal, an offshoot of those hostage crises.

The small, oil-rich nation of Kuwait is offering its condolences for the late President George H.W. Bush, who led the 1991 Gulf War that freed it from Iraq.
The state-run KUNA news agency flashed news of Bush's death Saturday morning at the age of 94.
Kuwait's ruling emir, Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah, offered his condolences to Bush's son, the former President George W. Bush. Sheikh Sabah also offered condolences to current President Donald Trump.
KUNA said Sheikh Sabah noted Bush's efforts to "create a new international order based on justice and equality among nations."
Sheikh Sabah also said Bush never "forgot the Kuwaiti people and will remain in their memory."

Former President Bill Clinton is remembering George H.W. Bush for his "great long life of service, love and friendship."
In a statement issued early Saturday, Clinton said he would be "forever grateful" for the friendship he formed with the man he turned out of the White House after one term.
Clinton, who defeated Bush in the 1992 presidential election, says he was always struck by Bush's "innate and genuine decency" and by his devotion to his wife Barbara and his family.
Clinton says Bush's extensive record of public service was rare, with his years in the military, in Congress, the United Nations, China, the CIA and as vice president and president.
Clinton adds that Bush never stopped serving even after leaving office, working on tsunami relief in Asia and within the U.S. after Hurricane Katrina.
The two former presidents worked together on those relief efforts.

Brent Scowcroft, the national security adviser during George H.W. Bush's presidency, said "The world has lost a great leader" and "this country has lost one of its best."
Scowcroft said in a statement that he was "heartbroken" at losing a man a man he called "one of my dearest friends."

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said the state joins the nation in mourning "the passing of one of our greatest Presidents."
In a brief statement, the Republican said "George H.W. Bush was an American hero and icon. He was a friend to all he met. He embodied class and dignity." Abbott added that "Texans are genuinely honored that he called the Lone Star State home and we collectively grieve this monumental loss."

President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump are mourning the passing of former President George H.W. Bush.
In a statement, the Trumps praise Bush for his "sound judgment, common sense and unflappable leadership."
The Trumps say that Bush "inspired generations of his fellow Americans to public service."
They also praise the former president for guiding the nation and the world to a "peaceful and victorious conclusion of the Cold War."
The Trumps add that Bush remained humble despite his accomplishments, "following the quiet call to service that gave him a clear sense of direction."
The statement was issued while the Trumps are in Buenos Aires, Argentine for the Group of 20 summit.

James A. Baker III, former President George H.W. Bush's secretary of state and longtime confidant, said his friend's legacy "will be forever etched in the history of America and the world." He noted Bush's "lifelong record of selfless patriotic service to our nation," from being the youngest U.S. Navy aviator in World War II to serving as a Texas congressman, United Nations ambassador, the first U.S. ambassador to China, CIA director, vice president and president.
In a statement, Baker said that in each position, Bush "led with strength, integrity, compassion and humility — characteristics that define a truly great man and effective leader." Baker added that, "with a singularly unique consistency, he always demonstrated these traits, whether on the global stage or interacting with people in his everyday life. His passion was a deep love of family and our country."

Praise is coming in for former President George H.W. Bush from another former president.
The office of former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama said Bush's life was "a testament to the notion that public service is a noble, joyous calling. And he did tremendous good along the journey."
The Obamas credited him with "expanding America's promise to new immigrants and people with disabilities. Reducing the scourge of nuclear weapons and building a broad international coalition to expel a dictator from Kuwait. And when democratic revolutions bloomed across Eastern Europe, it was his steady, diplomatic hand that made possible an achievement once thought anything but - ending the Cold War without firing a shot."
They said: "It's a legacy of service that may never be matched, even though he'd want all of us to try."

Former President George H.W. Bush has died at the age of 94.
Family spokesman Jim McGrath says Bush died shortly after 10 p.m. Friday, about eight months after the death of his wife, Barbara Bush.
The nation's 41st president served from 1989 to 1993, and eight years later watched his son George W. became the 43rd president.
The elder Bush saw his popularity swell with the United States' success in the Gulf War in 1991, only to watch it evaporate in a brief but deep recession. The Republican was defeated in his bid for a second term by Democrat Bill Clinton.
Bush had also been a World War II hero, Texas congressman, CIA director and Ronald Reagan's vice president.
Only one other U.S. president, John Adams, had a son who also became president.
