PROVO — Zach Warren and Anthony Stockwell each won a pair of matches to lead Westlake to a 2-0 finish in front of close to 1,000 fans at the ninth-annual Wrestling Against Cancer Duals at Provo High School.

Warren pinned Skyridge’s Ernest Barlow in 5 minutes, 15 seconds, and Stockwell added a pin over Kameron Ravert in 2:43 to lead the Thunder to a 45-31 victory over the Falcons in the early meet.

The upper-weight duo then added pair of falls in a combined 3:10 to lift Westlake to a 55-15 rout of Corner Canyon in the later duals.

Reigning 126-pound state champion Jacob Finlinson added a pin in 1:30 over Skyridge's Thageyn Smith.

Nine schools participated in six dual meets over the course of the Tuesday evening.

In addition to kicking off the 2018-19 Utah high school wrestling season, the event also raised $600 for Erik Heppler, a Springville resident who is currently battling stage 3B colon cancer.

The event also serves as a tribute to the late Ric Thompson, a long-time Payson wrestling coach who died from cancer in November 2010.

"I know that when I run this event, I don't do it alone," said former Provo wrestling coach Brian Preece, the event organizer. "I am inspired by the Thompson family and so grateful to Provo High School and the wrestling community that has supported this endeavor."
