MAGALIA, Calif. (AP) — Two men's basketball games in the Bay Area have been called off because of poor air quality from wildfires in Northern California, and the status of the Big Game between Stanford and California is in doubt. Cal canceled its basketball game against Detroit Mercy on Thursday night. San Francisco postponed its game Friday night against Arizona State. Cal says no decision has been made about the football game Saturday in Berkeley against Stanford.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Election offices across Florida will have to hand count at a bare minimum almost 54,000 ballots in the U.S. Senate race. A survey of 64 of Florida's 67 counties by The Associated Press put the number of overvotes and undervotes Thursday evening at 53,769 ballots in the U.S. Senate race between incumbent Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson and GOP Gov. Rick Scott.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker has said special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 election will proceed. That's according to a person familiar with a meeting Thursday between Whitaker and Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham. A bipartisan group of senators is pushing legislation to protect Mueller's job. They are concerned about Whitaker's past criticism of the Mueller probe.

MOUNT HOLLY, N.J. (AP) — A county prosecutor says a homeless man and a New Jersey couple conspired to fabricate a "feel good" story that netted about $400,000 in donations through an online fundraiser. The allegations against Mark D'Amico, Katelyn McClure and Johnny Bobbitt were uncovered Thursday. The three told their story to newspapers and television stations last year. All three are charged with theft by deception and conspiracy to commit theft by deception. Their lawyers had no comment.

NEW YORK (AP) — The first snowstorm of the season to hit the New York City area brought several inches of snow and slowed the evening commute to a crawl. The wet snowfall and wind gusts Thursday downed numerous tree branches throughout the city. Commuters were advised to stay indoors and avoid roads and the Port Authority Bus Terminal due to overcrowding. A mayoral spokesman says the early storm meant that Metropolitan Transportation Authority didn't have snow chains on its buses.
