CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina's Cameron Johnson says he feels free to 'just do more' after offseason hip surgery. The 6-foot-8 graduate student had an arthroscopic procedure in April to correct issues that had plagued his left hip since high school. Johnson says he battled pain and limited motion at times. Now he says he feels good as the Tar Heels work through preseason basketball practices.

UNDATED (AP) — Virginia Tech's defense is learning on the job and at times it shows. The Hokies have been inconsistent this season. Defensive coordinator Bud Foster says the group has to develop the maturity needed to "go to the next play."

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) — Miami Hurricanes forward Dewan Huell says he has legally changed his last name to Hernandez in honor of his mother, Christina Hernandez. The 6-foot-10 Hernandez declared for the NBA draft in April but later decided to return for his junior season.
