ST. GEORGE, Utah (AP) — A teenager accused of trying to blow up a homemade backpack bomb at a St. George high school after looking at Islamic State propaganda has pleaded not guilty. The Spectrum newspaper in St. George reports the 16-year-old boy entered his plea Wednesday and is due back in court on Aug. 22. The teen is charged with felony attempted murder and using a weapon of mass destruction, as well as misdemeanor graffiti and abuse of a flag.

SANDY, Utah (AP) — A 4-year-old Utah girl whose fingers were severed in a grocery store escalator last year is learning to color pictures again, but she could face more surgeries as her small hands grow. Her father Ramon Moreno said in an interview Wednesday it's hard to forget the terrifying day he held his daughter in one arm and two of her fingers in a bucket in the other. The girl's parents are suing the store they say failed to keep the escalator maintained. The store has declined to comment.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Utah man is suing McDonald's alleging that an employee spiked his Diet Coke with a heroin substitute. The 33-year-old Trevor Walker says he was with his three young sons in August 2016 when he suddenly lost control of his arms and legs and had to be taken to the hospital. Walker says in his lawsuit that authorities later determined the drink contained a heroin replacement. Police investigated but never made any arrests. McDonald's declined comment because of pending litigation.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Belgian tourist has died of apparent heat-related causes while hiking at a popular rock formation called "The Wave" near the Utah-Arizona border. Authorities say the 49-year-old was found dead Monday night after his 16-year-old son called his mom at a hotel to say his dad had become disoriented and needed help. Authorities say it's the first death since 2013 at the geological gem with swirls of red, orange and yellow that fold into a bowl.
