SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A security guard who police say fatally shot a man in the back after an altercation has been charged with murder. He and his employer are also being sued by the victim's family. Prosecutors say in charging documents that surveillance video shows 26-year-old Timothy Lutes shooting 54-year-old Thomas Stanfield in the back after Stanfield tried to walk away from a fight that started after Lutes asked him to leave the area. Lutes doesn't have an attorney listed in court records.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Mitt Romney looks like a shoo-in for a Senate seat from Utah after a landslide primary victory and toning down his criticism of Donald Trump, but first he'll face a Democratic opponent with a distinctly different political outlook. Salt Lake County Councilwoman Jenny Wilson is an underdog despite a political pedigree. Wilson says she's ready to spar with Romney on issues like tax policy, immigration and his change of tone on Trump. Wilson worked with Romney on the 2002 Olympics.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Pleasant Grove Police Chief Mike Smith is leading in the Republican primary for Utah County sheriff and appears poised to win the office. Retired U.S. Marshal Jim Phelps conceded the race Tuesday evening. The winner will replace retiring Sheriff Jim Tracy in Utah's second largest county, since no other candidates have filed to run in the general election.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Social worker Lee Castillo has won the Democratic primary to challenge eight-term Republican Rep. Rob Bishop in November. Castillo defeated Kurt Weiland in Tuesday's primary for northern Utah's 1st Congressional District. Castillo says his campaign will be reaching out to new voters as well as Republicans who have become frustrated with what he described as Bishop's reluctance to criticize President Donald Trump. United Utah Party candidate Eric Eliason will also be on the ballot.
